A LOCAL man is hoping to make a special batch of Frome cider at his brewing demonstration at Hunting Raven Books next month, celebrating the release of his book on how to make alcoholic drinks at home.
Frome resident Nick Moyle and Richard Hood from Bath, released Brew it Yourself: Make Your Own Beer, Wine, Cider and Other Concoctions in July this year.
The pair, who run established brewing blog ‘Two Thirsty Gardeners’, will be holding a cider-making demonstration at Hunting Raven Books on Cheap Street, from 11.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday 4th October.
Nick said, “Publishing the book has been an amazing experience. Initially we had plenty of fun researching and trying out the recipes, then had to put in a lot of hard work getting the book together. We photographed and designed the book as well, so had multiple deadlines to contend with, but having the finished book in our hands was an exciting and rewarding experience.
“Brew it Yourself has been extremely well received with coverage in national press and requests for radio interviews, and it has already opened up a few more doors for us to do some more work in the drinks industry.
“We’re both full-time designers so for now the book and website have been part-time pursuits. Hopefully the easy nature of the recipes will inspire other people to take up making their own drinks at home.
“We’re really looking forward to the Hunting Raven event. It’s great that the book will be on sale at such a great traditional book shop and we’re hoping a few people will pop along to see how easy cider making is.
“If anyone wants to bring their surplus apples to the event then we’ll add them to the mix and hopefully we’ll end up with a special batch of Frome cider!”
Brew it Yourself: Make Your Own Beer, Wine, Cider and Other Concoctions is a collection of more than 75 home grown brewing recipes, with drinks ranging from a classic elderflower sparkle to homemade absinthe.
Richard and Nick can tell you how to turn surplus fruit harvests into wines and liqueurs, and explain the arts of making mead, cider and beer, as well as more exotic Mexican tepache, Scandinavian glögg and Finnish lemon sema.
The book aims to show that creating your own tasty alcoholic drinks doesn’t need to be complicated or costly and, most importantly, can be a whole lot of fun.
