The charity Young People Frome have been doing workshops in local schools, led by Azeema Caffoor and Lenka Grimes, to discus cultural diversity and encouraging the children to share their cultural heritage.
Year 4s at Vallis School and Year 7s at Selwood Middle school enjoyed exploring where they or their family members come from and finding the countries on maps. They discovered interesting facts about each other and that there are people from over 40 countries in their local Frome community.
All the children thought about how they could help to make all people feel valued and welcome, especially in their own school. Then they designed an image they thought would be welcoming to people, to go on to their school sign alongside the welcome greeting in several different languages, representative of their school and community. All the images designed were recently exhibited at the Multicultural Frome event in the Cheese and Grain.
The completed signs were presented to schools and will be on display in their entrance areas. Azeema and Lenka will be completing more of these workshops with local schools.
The charity says, “Thank you to Mendip District Council and Community Council for Somerset for funding this project.”
