The Good Heart – Year review 2023

THE Good Heart would like to thank the many individuals and organisations in Frome who celebrated, practised and explored kindness with us in 2023, and whose support earned us the title ‘Community Group of the Year’ from BBC Radio Somerset.

At the beginning of the year, we welcomed Vicki Ross as our first venue manager. In addition to running our popular Tiny Hearts group for under-fives, Vicki has made the building come alive with activities, including 11 free warm spaces weekly and monthly sessions over the winter.

Susie Jenkins Temple and Jess Francombe also came onboard and organised a wonderful Frome Kindness Festival last March, publicised by the colourful designs of Melanie Dalton. We hope you’ll join us for another stimulating week of kindness-focused creativity, music, family fun and learning from 18th to 22nd March this year.

A big change in December was that our chef Namdi of Tibetan Memories decided to move on after over five years of providing momos and other home-cooked dishes at The Good Heart, including around 50 free pay-it-forward meals each month. We wish him well and look forward to welcoming Luna Plant-Based Kitchen as our new resident chefs for 2024.

The event was also attended by residents, staff and representatives from local community groups and businesses, along with local councillor George Jeans.

The official opening was marked with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Home Manager Wendy Perkins, who proudly declared the care home open alongside Co-CEO Al-Karim Kachra and Chairman Abdul Kachra.

“The home has been thoughtfully designed to deliver person-centred care in a warm, welcoming environment that supports independence, dignity and wellbeing,” said Wendy.

  • Tributes paid to popular founder of Keyford Hedgehog Rescue

Tributes have been paid to the Keyford Hedgehog Rescue and Rehab member, Graham Gillions, who died on Saturday 3rd January following a short illness.

Graham was a popular Frome resident who set up and ran Keyford Hedgehog Rescue and Rehab, with his partner Jennie Owen, in a bid to help the town’s hedgehog population thrive.

Mayor of Frome Cllr Anita Collier said, “Frome is a town full of wonderful, remarkable people, working hard to make the world a better place. There’s no doubt at all that Graham Gillions was one of them.

“We hosted Graham at a council meeting last year; talking about his work with Keyford Hedgehog Rescue and his passion for hedgehog conservation was so evident, as well as his enormous knowledge, his warmth and his kindness. We were so sorry to hear the news and our thoughts are with everyone who loved and knew Graham – thank you to him for all his work.”

  • Disability-friendly car available for community use thanks to local man

A disability-friendly car is now available for community use in Frome to help wheelchair users and housebound residents get out and about, thanks to a local man.

The vehicle was purchased last year by Frome resident Pete Dayman-Johns and, thanks to funding from Frome Selwood Rotary, which has paid for specialist insurance, residents can now book the car to drive people to medical appointments, groups or shopping.

Pete said, “I took it upon myself to get the car last year and start this scheme because there aren’t many disability-friendly taxis available in Frome as quickly as my car can be. I like helping people and this is my way of doing that.

“This isn’t a common thing in other towns. It was an idea I had after learning that so many people are struggling to get out and about and to medical appointments.”

  • Frome volunteers knit hearts for palliative care patients

Frome volunteers have knitted more than 100 hearts to support palliative care patients and their families.

The hearts were donated to the Royal United Hospital in Bath following an appeal, coordinated through the Co-operative Funeralcare – Frome, which called on local knitters to create hearts using a specific pattern.

The appeal came after a Frome resident introduced the team at the Co-op to the Compassion Memory Hearts scheme following her uncle’s death, when a heart had been left on his pillow.

The scheme sees volunteers knit pairs of small hearts. One heart is left on the patient’s pillow, while the other is given to their family as a keepsake, offering comfort and connection when they cannot be together.

  • Frome woman raises over £36,500 for cancer charity with running challenge

Frome fundraiser Rachel Clark has raised over £36,500 for a cancer counselling charity through a mile-a-day running challenge.

Rachel ran a mile a day in 2019, 2024 and 2025 running in all weathers and encouraging residents to join her and donate to We Hear You (WHY), a cancer counselling charity in Frome.

Rachel said, “Over the years approximately 10,205 epic people joined in with the challenge; the youngest was four years old, the oldest was 77, thousands interacted online, we ran through all the seasons, from heatwaves to blizzards.

“The ripple effect of 365 was magic. Some of you were inspired to take up running and many of you took up fundraising for WHY yourselves. Fundamentally we made a difference, in so many ways. This challenge was never about distance; it was always more than just a mile.”

  • Somerset Council faces ‘lingering death’ over £73m budget gap

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council is facing a ‘lingering death’ in the face of an estimated £73m budget gap, councillors and auditors have warned.

The council recently launched a consultation on its initial budget proposals, including just over £20m of new savings or increases in its existing fees and charges.

Clive Heaphy, the council’s interim chief financial officer, had previously admitted that the authority would require exceptional financial support from the government for a third consecutive year in order to balance its books without totally exhausting its reserves.

But members of the council’s audit committee have warned that the council may have left it too late to turn things around – making effective bankruptcy increasingly likely.

This comes after external auditors Grant Thornton warned that the council had to go faster to change the way it delivered services, issuing three statutory recommendations or ‘red cards’ against the authority.
