FROME Community Education courses make a welcome return next week with a much-increased line up of day and evening courses as well as one-day weekend workshops.
For the uninitiated, Frome Comm Ed is a not-for-profit, Community Interest Company, founded in 2011 to provide classes for adults who like to learn for pleasure. This Autumn Term it is seeking to run 46 weekly courses and seven one-day workshops – some from as little as £18.
New courses this term reflect an increased focus on the written word as well as on history and culture.
For those interested in current affairs, and how history impacts the present day, there are still places available for ‘Dissecting the News’ with new tutor Roger Southard, as well as ‘20 Events That Have Helped Shape the Nation’ with David Lassman, and ‘A Global History of Empire’ with Greg Morter. For writing enthusiasts, new this term is ‘How to Write a Non-Fiction Book’ and ‘Screen Writing’ with David Lassman.
The arts and crafts programme also continues to expand with new classes (booking up fast) in Silk Painting, Screen Print for Beginners, and ‘Painting that Calms the Soul’ – a class that aims to send you away with your own paper or silk artwork, feeling both refreshed and filled with inner peace.
Local Frome artist Amy Yates’ ‘Mixed Media Art Class’ has the option of both a day and evening class, whilst students can also choose from ‘Beginners’ Drawing and Painting’, ‘Imperfect Painting with Acrylics’ and ‘Diving into Watercolours’ (only a few spaces left).
New, creative weekend workshops are also available in both Macrame and Collage. Moving towards Christmas (is it too early to mention?) there is Festive Willow Weaving, Gelprinting Gifts and the opportunity to ‘Embrace or Escape Christmas – with Creative Collage’.
Programme manager, Pia McGee says, “We are delighted with the response to our Autumn programme. Some classes have completely sold out, most others are filling fast. There is still time to book, but with courses starting next week, you need to be quick!”
