The Multicultural Frome Festival returns this weekend at the Cheese and Grain.
Young People Frome, the local charity behind the event, says, “On Sunday 10th November 12-3pm at the Cheese and Grain, local people will once again be celebrating and sharing the many different rich and diverse cultures of Frome. There are over 50 nationalities represented in Frome and so many interesting traditions, customs and ways of doing things to celebrate and discover.
“At the event there will be English clog dancing, Finnish singing, Klezmer music, crafts, Remembrance Sunday displays and talks, national costumes, kids’ activities and plenty of food to try! Come and have a go at dancing, making a Mexican catrina mask, a Thai Kratong, calligraphy and origami, have a Henna tattoo. It’s a fun, friendly, free entry community event organised by the charity Young People Frome.”
In the lead up to the event, Young People Frome – which celebrates and promotes multicultural Frome – has worked with two more schools, thanks to funding from the Community Council of Somerset.
Group members visited two year 4 classes at Trinity First School to raise awareness of diversity and difference. The workshops focused on students sharing their cultural heritage and some of the special traditions of their countries.
The children then produced images that they felt would be welcoming to families from all over the globe for their school sign. These have been incorporated into a new school sign for Trinity which includes ‘Welcome’ in over 20 different languages and will be displayed outside the school entrance.
