A group of toddlers from Frome and the nearby area have hiked up Cley Hill near Warminster, to raise money for the Red Cross’s Emergency Ukraine Appeal. So far, the toddlers have raised over £2,000.
Organiser Amy Barnhurst said, “The idea was conceived by myself when the news of the emerging humanitarian crisis first came out. Lots of people wanted to help but perhaps weren’t sure where or how to send donations.
“I thought some cute toddlers hiking a big hill could encourage people to donate!”
Eight two-year-olds took part, all knowing each other since they were newborns from baby groups such as Frome Birth Talk and Frome Library’s Rhyme Time. The parents all created JustGiving pages for donations to be sent to and chose the Red Cross as the charity of choice.
“I was so proud of my two-year old’s determination to make it to the top”, added Amy. “I explained that we were climbing the big hill to raise money for children who needed our help. Although he doesn’t fully understand yet, I hope when he’s older we can explain what he achieved at such a young age, and he can be proud. Hopefully it will be the start of a lifetime of charitable contribution for him.
“We used a bit of bribery to encourage them – hot chocolate and cookies at the top! But they did so well and were in good spirits. Most of the toddlers have stopped napping generally but nearly all of them fell asleep when they got home after their big hike!
“We chose the Red Cross as they are doing a lot on the ground trying to get people out and providing emergency relief. It’s amazing what they are doing in such difficult circumstances.”
