FROME hosted the UK’s biggest town crier festival last week, welcoming 23 criers to the town to battle it out to be crowned the best.
Organised and hosted by Frome’s town crier Mike Bishop and his wife and consort Angie, the day was dedicated to Angie’s father, Anton Ljubljanovic, who sadly died the day before the event.
Mike said, “A great day was had by all, even under the sad circumstances. 23 criers is the largest number of criers to meet for a festival so far this year. Well done to everyone who competed”
The winning crier was Ken Knowles from Lichfield, Staffordshire, in second place was Trevor Heeks from Trowbridge, and in third place was Mark Wylie from Calne.
The top Somerset crier on the day was Andrew Fox from Ilminster. Melksham’s town crier, Peter Dauncey and wife Joan scooped three awards between them, winning best dressed crier, best dressed couple and best dressed escort.
