Town mourns inspiring campaigner Lisa Wells

TRIBUTES are being made to Frome cancer campaigner, Lisa Wells, following her death on  Saturday 17th August after being diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in 2017.

Flowers from families in Frome and those wanting to pay their respects were laid on the Boyles Cross fountain last week in Lisa’s memory.

Lisa is survived by her husband Dan Wells and two young daughters, Ava and Saffia. She spent time after her diagnosis campaigning to reduce the age that people can get bowel screenings. To spread her campaign, Lisa set up a charity group, ‘Lisa’s Army UK’ which was supported by family and friends, as well as thousands of people who were inspired by her work.

She was recognised nationally when she was chosen as HELLO! magazine’s Star Mum of 2018, and she appeared on the popular daytime television show This Morning. Lisa also co-wrote a children’s book which supports families affected by cancer.

Dan announced the news on social media saying, “At 5am this morning Lisa lost her battle with cancer. She’s now at peace, no more pain, no more suffering. Sleep tight you absolute warrior, you won the hearts of many.”

Alongside her supporters, Lisa raised money for her two daughters’ future using JustGiving,  as well as various charities including We Hear You; Mummy’s Star, the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting women and their families affected by cancer during pregnancy and Dorothy House.

The children’s book she co-wrote with local author, Michelle Robinson, helps children who may be faced with the loss of a parent.

She was also awarded HELLO! magazines ‘Star Mum’ award, JustGiving’s ‘Crowdfunder of the year’ award,  ‘Inspirational Woman of the Year’ run by the Daily Mail, and switched on Frome’s Christmas lights in 2018 alongside former mayor Richard Ackroyd and Frome Times’ person of the year Rachel Clark.

She also helped to organise many events to  crowdfund and fundraise for charity including a Mother’s Day walk on the Westbury White Horse, a music gig at the Cheese and Grain, as well as a family fun day.

Author Michelle Robinson said, “Working with Lisa on ‘Only One Of Me’ was an absolute privilege. Lisa put her heart and soul into her book. With a heart and soul like Lisa’s, that makes it very special indeed.

“Like everything Lisa did, the project was fuelled by her energy and generosity, all driven by her love for Ava and Saffia. Their mum’s lovely voice can still be heard on every page. Her comforting message will carry on being heard for years to come.”

Frome charity We Hear You said, “Lisa was an inspiration to so many people locally and did amazing work opening up the conversation about the physical and emotional impact of cancer on an individual and everyone connected to them.

“WHY were delighted to benefit from the publication of Lisa’s beautiful picture book ‘Only One of Me’, written with local author Michelle Robinson for children facing the loss of a parent.

“In addition to receiving half of all royalties from sales, we’ve been able to distribute crowdfunded copies with other families facing bereavement and with some of the organisations we work with. Our thoughts are with Lisa’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

HELLO! magazine also released the following statement, “Lisa Wells, HELLO!’s Star Mum of 2018, was a mum in a million. Brave and determined to leave a legacy of love and joy for her daughters.  Everyone at HELLO! is devastated for her family. Your star will shine bright, Lisa. You were an inspiration to us all.”

Messages of love are being shared by everyone on the Lisa’s Army UK Facebook page as well as people choosing to have the Lisa’s Army logo on their profile pictures in memory of Lisa.

  • Anniversary celebrations at The Good Heart mark seven years of kindness

The Good Heart is celebrating its seventh anniversary this summer, with the team inviting the whole town to join them for a joyful evening of food, music and dancing.

The birthday celebration will take place on Friday 25th July, from 7pm to 10pm at Trinity Church Hall.

“It promises to be a lively night with a fabulous Cajun band, a Cajun-inspired supper and plenty of games, prizes and dancing,” said director of The Good Heart Alison Murdoch.

“Tickets cost £23.50, which includes dinner, fete tokens for games, and a welcome drink. All profits will go directly towards The Good Heart’s community projects.

“Volunteers are also warmly welcomed – and will receive a free ticket and dinner in return for helping out on the night.”

  • Frome hiker raises £6,000 for four charities by trekking 325 miles

A Local man has raised nearly £6,000 for charity by completing four long-distance treks since 2017.

Tom Ayres has walked a total of 325 miles across the four challenges – some solo and others with friends – raising funds for Cancer Research UK, local cancer counselling charity We Hear You, The Sick Children’s Trust and a charity supporting children with diabetes.

“I like the idea of creating a challenge and pushing yourself to the limit, and I also like the endurance side of it where you have to really dig deep,” said Tom. “People can also relate to walking. I enjoy walking anyway, and it’s a nice way to see the local countryside.”

When Tom completed his first trek in 2017, he and some friends hiked along the Two Moors Way – a long-distance trail in Devon – raising money for a juvenile diabetes charity and local cancer counselling charity We Hear You.

  • ‘We Will Rock You’ - musical theatre group gets set for summer performance

Tickets are on sale for this year’s Frome Musical Theatre Company youth production, We Will Rock You, at the Frome Memorial Theatre.

We Will Rock You follows two rebels on a quest to save rock ’n’ roll in a post-apocalyptic world where there are no musical instruments and rock ’n’ roll has died.

“Watch our heroes, Galileo and Scaramouche, as they team up with a group of societal outcasts, the Bohemians, to take back the iPlanet from the all-powerful Globalsoft, led by the Killer Queen,” said Sarah Doble, a member of the theatre company. “Join them as they fight for freedom, individuality and the resurrection of music.

“The cast of young Bohemians are in school years 3 to 11 and have put the show together in a short time over the summer.”

  • New survey launched for community organisations and charities

Community groups and social enterprises are invited to take part in a new survey designed to capture the funding needs, challenges and strengths of Frome’s vibrant voluntary and community sector.

The survey, being run by Frome Town Council and Locality UK, is open to a wide range of not-for-profit organisations, including clubs, community groups, charities, social enterprises, arts organisations, community venues and more – of all sizes.

“We know that community organisations and social enterprises are working harder than ever to support local people – often with limited resources. This survey is a chance for us to listen, learn, and explore how future funding and support can best meet the needs of Frome’s voluntary and community sector,” said Johannes Moeller from Locality UK, a national membership network supporting community organisations, who have been commissioned to carry out this anonymous survey.

  • Supergrass play sold-out gig to support community campaign.

Britpop icons Supergrass took to the stage at a packed Cheese and Grain delivering a fundraising gig in support of the local campaign to save Packsaddle Fields from development.

The sell-out show, which was a headline Frome Festival event, took place on Friday 11th July with support from local indie band Lumley.

All ticket sale proceeds are being donated to People for Packsaddle’s fundraising campaign. The group is urgently trying to raise £10,000 to cover legal costs in their effort to prevent development on Packsaddle Fields, located on the northern edge of Frome.

Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, who lives in Frome, supports the campaign. The band performed their debut album I Should Coco in full to mark its 30th anniversary, followed by a selection of their well-known songs, including Alright, Caught by the Fuzz, and Mansize Rooster.

  • Roll up! Roll up! Frome Carnival Family Funday this month

The Frome Carnival Family Funday will be held on Saturday 19th July at Victoria Park.

The day will feature all the usual favourites including local stalls from groups and charities, the dog show, bonniest baby competition and the selection of this year’s carnival royalty.

Organiser, Mandy Morgan said, “We are looking forward to holding the event and welcoming the community to join us for all the usual activities and performances from Frome groups.”

New to the fun day this year is the carnival team’s very own ride-on train. “We were previously borrowing the Lions’ train. Harry, our shed manager, had the opportunity to purchase a ride-on lawnmower, and he’s done it up into a train. It looks great.”

With around a £2,000 shortfall this year, the carnival team are keen to raise as much money as possible at this year’s Family Fun Day. “We really need a good fun day,” said Mandy. “The Food Festival has very kindly let us have a stall where we sell cakes, and we usually make some money there too. We are also hoping to hold a few bingo events.”

A Group for dads has launched in Frome to provide a network of support and a space for dads to talk about their mental health and share experiences.

For Dads Sake launched in June, founded by four local men - Max, Wayne, Alex and Ben - and offers a space where local dads can talk, share advice and form friendships and connections with others who may have shared experiences.

“Dads of all different ages, with children of all different ages, from anywhere in the area are welcome to join the group,” said Max, one of the dads leading the group. “Although we are born in Frome, the hope is that it will attract dads from all over the surrounding areas. We are not mutually exclusive to Frome.”

The first official For Dads Sake meet-up was on 2nd July at the Archangel pub, where over 20 dads attended.
