THE travelling community is being praised by local charity, Fair Frome, as they fill up local food banks as part of a national initiative.
The national initiative, known as #foodbankchallenge involves the travelling community filling up trolleys with food, nappies and more to donate to local food banks to help with the need over the Christmas period.
Then they upload a video of themselves completing the challenge, tagging other members of the community to do the same within a 48-hour period.
Bob Ashford, chair of Fair Frome trustees, was called to Asda in Frome last week to collect the ‘phenomenal amount’ of donations.
He said, “This is an amazing initiative by the gypsy and traveller community nationally and locally to support foodbanks. They have donated a phenomenal amount of food at Asda to our food bank at a time of year when it’s most needed. Our thanks to them and all the other “invisible” donors.”
Zoe Hughes wrote to Frome Times and said, “It would be a good idea to praise the travelling community on their amazing support to local food banks. I think a big well done and praise should be given, especially when they only ever get bad press.”
