Frome Park bowler, Wayne Pitts, is having an excellent season, producing some good consistent bowls and this form has seen him progress in the Champion of Champions Singles.
The club reports, “Wayne had a tricky match to play away at Purnells, but overcome his opponent Terry by 23 -17 and moves into the semi-finals at Wells where we wish him all the best.
“Frome Park men continued their good form in the Turnbull Cup with an outstanding win at Frome Selwood. On a tricky green, the park bowlers got the better of their hosts and managed to win on all 4 rinks by a healthy margin of 91 shots to 72. They will have a tough away fixture against Bloomfield, Bath, in the next round with a quarter-final place awaiting the winners.
“It has been a different story in the County league though. The “A” team have slipped to a couple of defeats, first away against Norwest “B” which was a bit of a blow as Norwest had been struggling themselves, but then at home against top of the table and an undefeated Bath “B” team. The park put up a good battle for a while, before finally losing out on all rinks.
“The “B” team brought their losing run to a halt with a well-fought win away at Purnells, winning on 2 rinks and overall by a score of 55-50 to pick up a much-needed 10 points.
“In the midweek league, Frome Park men beat Street in a very close match, with both sides sharing the rink wins, but Frome winning overall to pick up 8 points. In a friendly match, Frome Selwood got some compensation for that Cup defeat to pip the Park at home in a close match by a score of 82 – 70.
“The Park ladies have had some mixed fortunes, in the Fear Cup a difficult away fixture at Bath resulted in a defeat by 65 – 47. In the Wild League a disappointing defeat against Frome Selwood where there was 2 rinks tied with Selwood taking an easy win on the third to seal the win by 49 -38. They then bounced back with a good win against Castle Cary, a very close match went the way of Frome Park by 2 shots, final score being 54 – 52. This was mainly thanks to the winning triple of Val Smith, Olivia Grant & Myra Drew who overcame their opposition by 27 – 12.
“During the Frome Festival, Frome Park had a free open day where the public were invited to “Have a go at bowls”. This was a very successful event with several club members showing a steady stream of willing newcomers how to bowl and the basic rules on how to play this game. Everybody seemed to enjoy the experience and hopefully this introduction to the game will encourage more of them to take up bowls in the future.”
