A COMIC fantasy based on the story of the nativity, Three Wise Fools, is being performed at the Wesley Methodist Church on Sunday.
The play takes a light-hearted look at the story of the three wise men who might not have been as wise as originally thought.
“Wisdom does not necessarily come with wealth and the three characters at the centre of a performance will certainly prove that,” says director, Gerard Crawshaw.
“Making up the cast are Ray Warren, Bill Jackson and Nigel Williams with Esme Patey-Ford as the angel.
“The three men arrive at the stable all high and mighty, expecting to see the baby and take precedence over everyone else. They are however, kept waiting, much to their annoyance, even though they have travelled so far. The shepherds then turn up from just down the road and get shown straight in.
“Unlike the nativities that most would know from their school days, with the three wise men as one-dimensional characters involved in the story of the birth of Jesus, Three Wise Fools allows them to have personalities.
“In this version they are very individual characters. One is older, wiser and more philosophical; another is younger, unsure and nervous and wants to see they’ve got to the right place; while the third is more practical and gets on with things. There is a good bit of banter between them as they get on each other’s nerves and that’s where the comedy comes in. But while it is funny, it still has a serious message.”
Three Wise Fools will be performed as part of the service at Wesley Methodist Church, Wesley Slope, BA11 1HA at 10.30am on Sunday 10th December.
“Admission is free but you will be expected to join in with the carols,” says Gerard.
