THE Cheese and Grain welcomes Sacred Music From Mountain And Moor, a celebration of song and music with Nigel Shaw, Hiroki Okano and Domenic DeCicco on Wednesday June 15th, 8.45pm.
This will be a unique and intimate concert from three acclaimed musicians who have been writing and performing around the world together for over 15 years.
The performance will included songs from their various albums they’ve worked on together, including Bamboo Cedar Oak and Songs of Our Grandfathers and music from Domenic’s recent solo album, Seeds of Evergreen. They will be playing a wide range of traditional flutes from many cultures, drums, bouzouki, guitar, Cretan Laouto, keyboards and voice, making for a truly inspirational evening of music.
Nigel Shaw is a renowned international composer living in the heart of Dartmoor’s wild hills. He has created over thirty albums of music, including ten solo recordings of beautiful and profound compositions. He draws inspiration for his music from the spirit of sacred land, a celebration of the natural world and the honouring of ancestors within the ancient culture of the British Isles.
He is also a maker of wooden flutes and has crafted many of the instruments that will be used in this concert. He performs regularly at Chalice Well with his partner, the singer Carolyn Hillyer.
Hiroki Okano is one of the most respected ambient composers in Japan. He has travelled the world with his music of peace and unity, and carried the Hiroshima Peace Flame on a pilgrimage around the globe, including presenting it on the main stage at Glastonbury Festival.
His other projects include Tenkoo Orchestra and the Wind Travelling Band. Both Hiroki and Nigel are part of Bamboo Cedar Oak, a trio of master flute players who carry the ancient flute traditions of their cultures.
Domenic DeCicco is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer/producer who has travelled the world sharing his music as a solo artist and as co-founder/lead vocalist of the innovative acoustic roots band Praying for the Rain. Musician magazine calls him, “a deeply soulful and compelling musician and storyteller who brings a rich, uncluttered quality to his music that fills his songs with evocative imagery and lyrical narrative”.
In 2015, he released a new album, Seeds of Evergreen, to rave reviews, “The latest album is a beautiful mix of soothing vocals, meaningful lyrics and peaceful guitar work. DeCicco’s voice is exceptional”…Maverick magazine.
He has toured throughout Europe, Canada, Africa, Japan and the Middle East and has performed at festivals such as Glastonbury, Womad and Stainsby and at London’s Union Chapel and South Bank.
