With our national memory this year focussed on war in Europe, it’s important to remember the social upheavals at home nearly a century ago.
On Friday 19th September, Red Ladder theatre company presents Wrong ‘Un, the story of a working-class suffragette.
It is February 1918. After several decades of protest and four years of bloody war, Parliament is poised to grant what the suffragettes have demanded and fought for – votes for all women. After years of direct action, arrest, imprisonment and force-feeding, it seems their time has come.
Wrong ‘Un tells of the adventures of Annie Wilde, a Lancashire mill-girl galvanised by a rousing mixture of injustice, conviction, self-doubt and fear on her journey from schoolroom to prison cell and beyond in a musical drama that draws on class, privilege, hope and disappointment in wartime England.
The performance starts at 7.45pm, tickets are £12 with £10 concessions and the recommended audience age is 12 plus. Call 01373 465949 or go to www.mer lintheatre.co.uk.
Running time is 60 minutes with no interval, but there is the opportunity for a pre-show supper which will be served 45 mins before the performance with mains at £7 and puds for £3, payable on the night. To book supper, please contact Keren Hayden at kerenhayden@ gmail.com or tel: 07968 753632.
