POLLING day is rapidly approaching on 5th May, and Frome Town Council is hosting a hustings to give voters the chance to meet and question the candidates for the unitary and town council elections, listen to others and get involved in local politics.

The hustings will be on 1st May, between 5pm and 7pm, and candidates have been invited from all parties standing in the election to open themselves up to questions from the public at the Cheese & Grain.

These elections mark the first time the new Somerset Unitary Council seats are up for grabs. Therefore, these hustings will give voters the best opportunity to grill the candidates on their proposals to make a difference on the new council and to find out a little bit more about how it will potentially operate.

Only one seat is being contested in the town council elections. Town clerk, Paul Wynne said, “We are surprised that only the Berkely Down Ward seat is to be contested in the Town/Parish elections, but wish all those standing across Frome the best of luck in the coming weeks.”

To submit questions for the hustings in advance, email lflaherty@frometowncouncil.gov.uk with your name, question, who it is directed to and whether you would like to read it aloud at the meeting yourself.

For more information on the elections, and to book a slot at the hustings head to: www.frometowncouncil.gov.uk/elections.

For a list of who is standing, see our listing on the opposite page.

  • Donate old devices at tech amnesty

Donate old devices for reuse or recycling at Donate IT’s tech amnesty at Frome Town Hall on Saturday 31st January.

Anyone with unwanted digital devices such as smartphones, laptops, consoles or desktop computers can drop them off to be securely wiped of all data and either donated to someone in need or disposed of responsibly within the UK.

Frome Town Councillor Anne Hill said, “70% of global toxic waste is linked to discarded tech in landfill and the precious metals inside devices, such as copper and cobalt, are much more intensive and difficult to mine than they are to recycle.”

Somerset charity Donate IT recently handed out their 2,000th device and now have 50 drop-off points across Somerset, including the town hall. Frome Town Council collects devices for Donate IT all year round and hosts two tech amnesties each year.

  • No final decision on size of planned Somerset council tax increase

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset residents will face higher council bills in the spring – but no final decision has been made on how much they will increase.

Somerset Council is in detailed negotiations with central government as it moves to set its budget in late-February, with officers seeking a third consecutive year of exceptional financial support in order to close a £73m budget gap.

Conservative opposition leader Councillor Diogo Rodrigues claimed that the council had asked the government to let it increase council tax by “more than 20 per cent” last financial year and had requested an increase of “around ten per cent” for the coming financial year.

Council leader Bill Revans responded that these were “illustrative figures” and no formal request for such an increase had been made.

Like other unitary authorities in England and Wales, Somerset Council legally cannot raise its council tax level by more than 4.99 per cent without staging an expensive referendum.

  • Historic adventures of a local family at society’s next lecture

True life adventures of a Frome family in the 18th and 19th centuries will be explored at Frome Society’s next Saturday afternoon lecture.

The lecture, on 24th January, will be delivered by Keith Browning, who has researched family histories. It will highlight the lives of the local gentry as they interact with their tenants and parishioners.

Organisers say, “Every level of society had to struggle as Britain was transformed from a country dependent on sheep to one dominated by the effects of the Industrial and Social Revolution, which evolved to become Victoria’s Empire. The story features a family who should be the richest in Britain today but are barely known outside the boundary of Frome and the school chemistry laboratory.

  • Valentine lamp lighting ceremony returns next month

The annual Valentine lamp lighting ceremony is being held on Saturday 14th February at the top of Catherine Hill.

The ceremony sees Frome’s famous Valentine gas lamp lit by Eddie Young, the lamplighter, who will be dressed in period costume and light the lamp using a traditional lamplighter’s pole and read the dedication to St Valentine.

Selected poems, on the theme of love, will be performed by the members of the Frome Writers Collective Poetry Group.

The event will start at 5.30pm when a Queen of Hearts rocket will be set off and explode in a red heart shape in the sky above the lamp.

Organisers say, “Join us for a glass of mulled wine in front of the lamp with accordion music by Tom Woolman.”

  • RSPB Somerset Big Garden Birdwatch – “Together, let’s make it count”

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns this month, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Almost 600,000 people took part in across the UK in 2025, counting more than nine million birds of over 80 species. In Somerset just over 13,300 residents joined in the count and the RSPB hope even more residents will sign up for 2026.

The survey provides a valuable snapshot of how our most common garden birds are faring and taking part is one positive way to take action for birds and nature.

This year’s event takes place on 23rd, 24th and 25th January. People in Somerset are asked to spend an hour watching and counting the birds in their garden or local park, or from their balcony, then send their results to the RSPB.

In Somerset the top three birds recorded last year were: House Sparrow, Blue Tit and Starling.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – Make your garden a lifeline for birds and wildlife

Hi, this is Jo from the Wild Bunch.

January is a particularly harsh month for birds. Prolonged cold snaps, heavy rain and sudden frosts make it much harder for all wildlife to find enough food and shelter. For garden birds especially, winter can be a real test of survival. While around 50 UK bird species migrate to warmer parts of the world, many remain here all year and rely heavily on fat reserves built up during autumn and winter to make it through.

This is where our gardens can make a real difference. Keeping feed-ers topped up with a variety of foods such as sunflower hearts, peanuts and fat-based products helps birds maintain their energy levels. Fresh water is just as important, especially during freezing conditions when natural sources may be unavailable. A shallow bird bath or dish, topped up daily and defrosted when needed, can be a lifeline.

  • Edmund Park flats fire repairs could take a year

Works to repair a block of flats that caught fire in Edmund Park last month could take up to a year to complete, according to Selwood Housing.

The fire originated in a second-floor flat on Marigold Road, Edmund Park, on 3rd December. Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue confirmed the fire was ‘accidental’ and started by a candle.

At the time of the fire, nine residents of the flats were evacuated and moved into temporary accommodation by Selwood Housing, which owns and manages the flats.

One resident, Chloe Raeburn, has reported that she has now been moved to live in Trowbridge after there was nothing temporarily available in Frome.

She said, “I am not happy about the whole situation. Lots of things are wrong at the moment. They have given us the option of either waiting for the flats to become available, which could take up to a year, or being offered new flats in Keyford. I don’t know what I am going to do.”
