F550 Frome Lions Charity Swim 2012 IMG 5037

The Annual Lions Club of Frome  28th  Sponsored Swim, held at  Frome Leisure Centre, saw 39 teams swim for their chosen charities, raising an estimated total of over £7,500.Organisers report that the event, held on Sunday 25th March, was slightly down on last year, mainly down to some public school teams breaking up for Easter. However, a total of 1,860 lengths of the pool were recorded which is about 55 miles in distance.   Teams of six swimmers were pitted against the clock as they swam the most number of lengths in relay for 25 long minutes. The organisers said, “As always, the atmosphere was fun, if tense, from the parade around the pool, to the start of the siren, with mostly occasional swimmers trying their hardest.“This year the record for the number of lengths swam was by Warminster Swimming Club’s ‘A Team’, who swam 86 lengths. “A few teams turned up with one or two swimmers short of the six they could use; fortunately there are a few volunteers who help make up the numbers. “James Short and Judy Chant were two who in particular should be mentioned for the many times they swam to help. In fact Judy has swum in this event for the last 19 years -what a lot of lengths that must be!” The Lions give many thanks to Yeoman Asphalt Ltd for sponsoring the event, thereby covering the administrative costs and allowing the entire money raised to go to the worthy causes. “Also, thanks must go to the many swimmers for their efforts, and to their sponsors for being so generous, all of which make this fun event so rewarding.” A rough estimate of the money raised on the day is over £7,400, this will only go up with the addition of sponsorship forms not yet received, and Gift Aid which has not been calculated.  The Lions Club of Frome would like to urge teams to send in any outstanding sponsorship money as soon as possible. The teams swimming share the money raised on sponsorship between their chosen cause and the Frome Lions Charity Fund on a 50:50 basis. There is a presentation night which will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hall, on Park Road, Frome on Friday 27th  April at 7.30pm, when it is hoped that all teams will be represented. Light refreshments will be provided.

  • First round of consultation begins on new Somerset Local Plan

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset residents and businesses have their first opportunity to give their views on the new Local Plan which will shape future of their county.

Decisions on new housing, employment facilities and other planning matters in Somerset are currently taken on the basis of the existing Local Plans inherited from the former district councils, which were abolished and replaced with Somerset Council in April 2023.

The council recently concluded a ‘call for sites’ for the new Somerset-wide Local Plan, with landowners, developers and land promoters putting forward sites which could help to meet rising government housing targets up to 2045.

The council has now launched the first round of public consultation on the new Local Plan, kicking off a process which will not conclude until the spring of 2029.

  • Bridge club member retires after three decades

The secretary of Frome Bridge Club has retired after more than 35 years of service, during which he helped grow membership and teach new players.

John Perry stepped down as club secretary at the club’s annual general meeting in May.

He was presented with an honorary life membership in recognition of his service.

A member of the club, Sarah Miller, said, “Without John’s hard work and dedication, the club would not be in the excellent state it is in now. John was, and still is, a driving force behind the development of the club.

“At one point, the membership declined to just 12 members. As one long-serving member recalls, there were evenings where only eight players attended, just enough for a simple teams’ competition. No one wanted the club to close but the income would not sustain paying for room hire. John set about organising a recruitment campaign by promoting lessons which he took himself. This was the catalyst for a steady expansion of the membership.

  • Frome’s Partner Towns Column – Discover Murrhardt

Hello, I’m Cllr Philip Campagna – here with the fourth in a series of articles introducing Frome’s partner towns, formerly known as ‘twin towns’.

I’m delighted to announce that Frome’s musical scene will be represented in Murrhardt by The Frukes a couple of weeks, as they attend the annual partner towns meeting.

First, a little about our German partner town. Murrhardt is in the region of Baden-Württemberg in southeastern Germany, some 30 miles northeast of Stuttgart. It has around 15,000 inhabitants. Murrhardt is named after the river Murr and is on the site of a Roman settlement. Murrhardt is recognised as the heart of the Swabian Forest. It is a beautiful German town with a rich Roman and medieval history, set in stunning natural landscapes. It’s an ideal location for hiking, cycling, skiing and boasts a number of green parks with lakes and tranquil gardens.

  • Ofsted praises progress at Frome primary school

A primary school in Frome has welcomed a positive Ofsted report marking a significant milestone in the school’s ongoing improvement journey.

Berkley First School has been rated ‘positively’ across every single assessment category. The outcome has been welcomed by the school following a rigorous evaluation process.

Executive Headteacher Dan Jeffries praised the collective effort in a letter addressed to families, calling the clean sweep of positive judgements a “fantastic achievement that reflects the dedication, hard work and care that defines our school community every day.”

The watchdog’s report heavily emphasised the positive daily experience of the children, describing Berkley First School as a ‘happy school with a close-knit community.’

  • Performing arts school launches summer workshops

Young people from Frome are being invited to take part in a series of summer performing arts workshops as a theatre school celebrates nearly a decade of working with local children.

Stagecoach Performing Arts Trowbridge and Frome has announced three summer programmes taking place in August, alongside the return of its Saturday classes in September.

The organisation, which works with children aged four to 16, has seen hundreds of young people from the area taking part in its classes over the past 10 years.

Freddie Underwood, principal of Stagecoach Trowbridge and Frome, said: “In that time, hundreds of children aged four to 16 have walked through our doors - and what they’ve experienced has been nothing short of extraordinary.

  • Frome runners join local clubs for Endure24 Challenge

Joanne Thwaite and Neal Crowe, two endurance enthusiasts from Frome Running Club, joined forces with like-minded members of Warminster Running Club to complete an attritional 24-hour relay trail race in Wasing Park, near Reading last month.

The annual event sees competitors looking to complete as many five-mile laps as possible in a 24-hour window; between 12 noon on the Saturday and 12 noon on the Sunday. Runners can tackle the undulating circuit individually, or as relay teams of three or six people. Jo ran as part of a three-person women’s team, with Neal running in a three-person men’s team.

The wet weather and constant footfall from 1,230 runners churned the course into a mud bath, but both Neal and Jo’s teams clocked up 27 laps each; a result that landed Jo’s team fifth in category. During the 24-hour window, the Frome pair clocked up 45 miles each.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column: Summer time!

Hi – it’s Jane here, from the Wild Bunch.

As we enter July and the height of summer, it’s a great time to spend a few moments sitting back in your garden or local green space and just enjoying what the summer has brought.

If you were able to take some small steps towards supporting our wildlife over the spring, now they – and you – will reap the benefits. Flowers for pollinators planted earlier in the year should be in full bloom, full of insects buzzing and birds feasting. Bird boxes may have hosted one or even two broods of blue tits or robins, or tree bumblebees may have taken up residence.

If you have been able to establish a little wild area of long grass, perhaps by following ‘No Mow May’, you may be rewarded with new wildflowers – as I was when a Pyramidal Orchid appeared in my garden for the first time. What a summer delight!
