THE Frome Heritage Museum is running three free events on Saturday 16th September as part of Heritage Open Days – England’s largest festival of history and culture.
The events are a behind the scenes tour of the museum, which will run twice, and a talk based on the display of the pharmacy at 20 Bath Street which closed in 1976 having traded for over 150 years.
The tour will take you to parts of the museum not normally open to the public and a chance to see the extensive archives stored at the museum such as the vaulted basements in Bridge Street, the ‘cantilever’ staircase in the main entrance, the lower and upper exhibition galleries, the library and collections room.
The tour, which will run twice at 11am and 3.15pm on the Saturday, involves a lot of steps and stairs so is unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility. As numbers are limited booking is essential.
The talk on the display of the pharmacy at 20 Bath Street will take place at 2pm on Saturday 16th September.
Organisers say, “We intend to highlight the life and times of patients and staff from the 19th and 20th centuries. We will also be displaying and explaining different pieces of pharmacy equipment and feature some of the advertisements that were published at the time.
“Presenting the talk will be Michael Maggs and Brian Wilkes. Michael is the grandson of Norman Maggs who was a very well-known pharmacist in Frome for many years as well as being involved in the life of the town. Brian is a retired pharmacist with 40 years’ experience in community pharmacy – 15 years working in Frome – and is proud to have had a professional relationship with Mr and Mrs Maggs in their later years.”
Although entry to the events is free, spaces are limited and advance booking is essential. Please email info@frome-heritage-museum.org to book your place. For further info please visit www.frome-heritage-museum.org and www.heritageopendays.org.uk
