Frome resident sets Guinness World Record in penny farthing challenge

2024 Penny Farthing Guinness World Record Extravaganza. 11th - 13th October 2024, Herne Hill Velodrome

A Frome resident has made the history books by setting a Guinness World Record for the greatest distance travelled in one hour on a penny farthing – using only one leg.

Alberto Bona, originally from Italy’s capital, Rome, set the record at London’s historic Herne Hill Velodrome last month, during the Extravaganza weekend. The event celebrated the penny farthing, a Victorian-era bicycle once heralded as a marvel of innovation, with a large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel.

Organised by London’s Penny Farthing Club, of which Alberto is a member, the event gathered enthusiasts from around the world, with a combined 13 Guinness World Records being achieved. Alberto covered 12.610 miles for his record-breaking challenge, where the left pedal was removed entirely from his penny farthing, ensuring it could not be used.

“Achieving a Guinness World Record in something so close to my heart it is truly meaningful,” says Alberto. “As a silent filmmaker and vintage enthusiast, I am always looking to honour the past while embracing the present. This record feels like a bridge between two worlds; my Italian heritage and my life here in Frome, where I have found a wonderful community that celebrates both tradition and individuality. I am grateful to represent the best of both worlds through my passion.”

Alberto chose to compete in the challenge cycling with one leg because it was a bit ‘eccentric’ and added an extra layer of endurance. “Riding a penny farthing itself is a throwback to an era when every ride was an adventure, but doing it with one leg elevated the challenge, paying homage to the spirit of resilience that defined Victorian cyclists. It is a nod to the idea that true endurance is not about what comes easily but about embracing what’s difficult, unusual, and even a bit eccentric.

“My journey began nearly a decade ago with a serendipitous encounter with adventurer Neil Laughton, founder of the Penny Farthing Club. What began as a curiosity has since transformed into a calling,” explained Alberto, who is a silent filmmaker and actor. He can often be seen donning the attire and mindset of the 19th century, guiding others through the joy of penny farthing cycling in Bath, Frome, and beyond.

“The penny farthing is not just a bike; it is a piece of living history that humbles and challenges,” he said.

Alberto’s journey from Italy to Frome has captivated audiences locally and internationally. “Italian media has embraced my record as a poetic nod to my Roman heritage and a testament to my embrace of English tradition,” he said.

“My path to Frome, however, was also inspired by my trusted peer James Holcombe, a respected analogue filmmaker whose work and spirit embody Frome’s creative soul. In Frome, I found the freedom to live the vintage life I once dreamed of while gazing at Rome’s timeless architecture.

“Riding a penny farthing is more than an athletic pursuit; it is a connection between worlds, a wheel bridging Rome and F-Rome.”

  • Frome restaurant donates surplus food to community fridge

Food that would otherwise go to waste will now be shared with local people thanks to a new partnership between Jay’s Kitchen and Edventure Frome’s Community Fridge.

Each Sunday, surplus food from Indian restaurant Jay’s Kitchen’s popular buffet service will be donated to the Community Fridge, where it will be made freely available to residents.

Community Fridge manager Terri Pitts said, “Food waste is one of the biggest challenges facing our food system. We’re delighted that Jay’s Kitchen has chosen to work with us. Their support means even more good food stays out of bins and reaches people who can enjoy it.”

Jay’s Kitchen, based in Oldford, is open seven days a week and is known for its Sunday buffet.

  • Daredevil team skydive 15,000ft for Fair Frome

A team of seven fundraisers took to the skies in a 15,000ft skydive, raising more than £3,000 for Fair Frome.

They completed the jump on Saturday 20th June at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury. It was coordinated by Fair Frome, giving volunteers and supporters of the charity the opportunity to take part in a fundraising challenge.

The charity supports residents in financial or food poverty, running the town’s food bank, community pantry scheme, baby basics bank, furniture bank and Food @ Five.

One of the team, Linda Bridges, said, “It was an absolutely fantastic experience. We were unsure whether we were going to be able to take part because it was overcast and cloudy. It was a shame because we had really geared ourselves up. Luckily, we were able to take part and it was amazing.

  • Get involved with Frome’s community gardens

Volunteers are invited to help out at Frome’s community gardens to learn new skills and take care of the space.

Frome has a growing network of community gardens and green spaces, including recently developed spaces like Milk Street Green and the community woodland at Spring Gardens.

There are also established areas like those at the Key Centre and Broadway Community Gardens, with a new space under way at St John’s, behind Frome Football Club.

Mayor of Frome, Cllr Mark Dorrington said, “Not everyone has their own garden or outdoor space, but everyone benefits from time outside. Sometimes we lose the habit of heading to the park when swings, slides and roundabouts lose their appeal and at the same time, perhaps without noticing, we lose the benefit of being out in nature. Our community gardens offer the chance to relax and meet people, perhaps learn some new skills and take care of the space together.

  • Deadline approaches for feedback on Frome school proposals

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Frome parents and residents have until 10th July to have their say on proposals to replace the town’s three-tier school system with a two-tier model.

Frome is one of the few remaining parts of Somerset operating a three-tier school system (comprising first, middle and upper schools) rather than the more widespread two-tier system (comprising primary and secondary schools).

An informal consultation was held in February and March over the proposed shift to a two-tier system, with 71 per cent of parents expressing their support in principle for the changes.

A public consultation is now open until 10th July with the changes expected to take effect from September 2028 if there is sufficient public support.

  • Saxonvale bid deadline confirmed as community proposal enters final stage

Somerset Council has confirmed that formal bids to purchase the Saxonvale site must be submitted by 9th July, marking a key milestone in the future of the 12-acre town centre site.

For Mayday Saxonvale, the confirmation means its community-led proposal is now in its final preparation stage as it works towards submitting its bid.

More than 350 people have invested over £320,000 to support the plan to bring Saxonvale into community ownership, with Mayday saying further investment will strengthen the proposal being put forward. The group is working with social impact lender Resonance and development partner Stories to finalise the funding structure for its bid.

  • Frome College introduces ‘no phone’ policy

A school in Frome has implemented a ‘no phone’ policy following government guidance to restrict the use of mobile phones in school.

All students at Frome College in Years 9 to 11 have been given lockable Yondr pouches to place their phones, smartwatches and earbuds into at the start of each school day.

Pouches will be unlocked at the end of each day by being placed against a specially designed magnet. There are over 40 unlocking sites around the college campus.

Principal Emma Reynolds said, “We had been planning a mobile-free campus strategy from last autumn, pre-empting the government’s guidelines released in April, which recommend that all schools restrict the use of mobile phones and smart devices throughout the day. The Department for Education has been consistently clear that mobile phones have no place in school and pending legislation has meant that Frome College has decided to implement a pouch system to support students.”

Over 20 food and drink vendors will have offerings from around the world and this year many will include a smaller ‘tasting menu’ at the event on Saturday 4th July.

For the first time this year, Sass Circus Ltd will be running a free children’s Circus Skills area preceded by a silver stilt walker for Frome Festival’s 25th anniversary.

The entertainment will extend into the Cheese and Grain hall, with three very danceable bands featured on the main stage.

  • Vibrant parade celebrates Frome Pride community

The first-ever standalone Pride Parade took place in Frome, with a lively and colourful procession through the town centre.

The parade, on Saturday 27th June, started at Rook Lane Chapel and was led by Cheryl Sprinkler of Mojo Moves to the Saturday market in the Cattle Market car park. It ended at a music stage outside the library, where speeches and further entertainment took place.

Mayor of Frome Cllr Mark Dorrington said, “We had no idea how many people would come along, especially so soon after the heatwave. I am pleased to say that loads of people came along, joined the parade or cheered it on, danced, sang and enjoyed themselves and the music stage and entertainment at the market afterwards was fantastic.
