Frome duo launch of end of summer festival

FROME’s Ryan Allcott and Jack Clink have taken on a unique challenge in launching a one-night mini-electronic- dance music festival in the heart of the West Country, dedicated to their eclectic choices and love of dance music. 

Their Powwow festival is on Saturday 12th September, 12 noon-4am at Grange Farm, West Ashton Nr Trowbridge, Wiltshire, BA14 6AX.

Punters can look forward to top music alongside a fusion of cuisines from around the world, quirky corners to relax and scenic outdoor hangouts with classic and chilled festival surroundings.

Tickets are £40 available from www.fieldtripparty.com – or £50 on the gate until 9pm.

  • Frome Town seal historic double with dramatic cup final win Frome Town completed a historic league and cup double with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Portishead Town last night in the Somerset Premier Cup final at Twerton Park. The Robins capped a remarkable season, having already secured the Southern League Division One title, but were made to work for their latest silverware after twice coming from behind. Portishead took the lead on 12 minutes, before David Duru brought Frome level just before the break. The Robins fell behind again early in the second half, conceding on 51 minutes, but substitute Sam Meakes equalised with 10 minutes remaining to set up a tense finish. Callum Gould then struck the decisive goal on 86 minutes to seal the win and spark wild celebrations. The victory marks Frome’s fifth Somerset Premier Cup triumph, following successes in 1967, 1969, 1983 and 2009, but their last two finals, in 2014 and last year in 2025, have ended in disappointment. Town fans will have a chance to celebrate the club’s first ever league and cup double in the final game of the season in a repeat fixture against Portishead Town on Saturday at Badgers Hill.   • Frome bids to become UK’s Town of Culture Frome has taken the first step in its bid to become the UK’s Town of Culture, with Frome Town Council submitting an expression of interest to the national competition. The Town of Culture programme celebrates towns where culture is part of everyday life, and where creativity can play a role in strengthening communities, improving wellbeing and supporting local economies. Following a well-attended stakeholder meeting, Frome’s bid builds on the town’s strong cultural foundations, from its nationally recognised venues and organisations to its network of festivals, markets and community-led activities such as the Carnival and the Children’s Festival. If successful, the bid could bring up to £3 million of investment to the town, supporting an ambitious programme of cultural activity and a long-term legacy focused on cultural opportunities for local people.   • Skydive to thank charities behind Frome girl’s care A group of tradesmen in Frome will complete a 15,000-foot skydive next month to raise funds for four charities which supported a local girl following major surgery. The group of 13 will complete the skydive on 22nd May at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury, aiming to raise £1,000 for the charities which supported Nancy Groves when she underwent heart surgery and trachea reconstruction at Great Ormond Street Hospital in May 2025 when she was just 18 months old. The funds raised will go to The Grand Appeal at Bristol Children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Great Western Air Ambulance Charity and The Sick Children’s Trust. Nancy’s dad, Ian Groves, said, “After just over two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit, we were admitted to a recovery ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital before finishing Nancy’s recovery at Bath Royal United Hospital. “Post-op, Nancy experienced three episodes of not being able to breathe resulting in three 999 calls and blue-light transfers to Bristol Children’s Hospital. During our third stay in Bristol, a CT scan showed extreme narrowing in her airway. This led to an air ambulance transfer from Bristol to Great Ormond Street.   • Frome Wild Bunch column: Growing food in a wildlife garden As well as trying to encourage wildlife into my garden, I also like to produce some food for us humans to eat! And yes, sometimes I have to share it with the local wildlife. Last year wood pigeons decided to strip my plum tree of fruit, eating the small, still green plums well before they were ripe (we got a little fruit from the lower branches). Sparrows are very fond of chard seedlings, pigeons and white butterfly caterpillars love to eat plants of the cabbage family, aphids decimated my broad beans and as for slugs and snails.   • Iconic Frome tree makes new picnic bench A new picnic bench has been installed in the play area in Victoria Park, created from timber salvaged from a well-loved 140-year-old tree. The Norway maple tree was felled in May last year after a serious fungal condition rendered it unsafe. Some of the timber has already been made into a nature-themed bench by specialist woodworker Graham Derham, unveiled in September last year. The new bench has been handcrafted by town council ranger Mike Wright, providing a sociable space for picnicking in the younger children’s play area and continuing the life of the Norway maple close to its original position.   • New hot yoga studio opens in Corsley A hot yoga studio offering a range of classes and wellbeing sessions has recently opened in Corsley. INWRD, based within a CrossFit facility, provides daily yoga classes designed for all levels, combining strength, mobility and relaxation in a single setting. Studio manager and yoga teacher Fiona Shaw said the aim is to create an inclusive and supportive environment. “INWRD is a welcoming hot yoga studio offering daily, varied classes for all levels,” she said. “We’re proud to be one of the only hot yoga studios for miles – and the only one based within a CrossFit space. “We offer a unique environment that brings strength, mobility and wellness together.   • Frome Hoedowners cleanup town A group in Frome dedicated to weeding and hoeing the streets recently cleaned up the Market Yard and riverbank area. Frome Hoedowners carried out a pre-Easter cleanup of the Cheese and Grain and Market Yard area, including the riverbanks, to make it more welcoming for visitors and residents. The group reported, “Lots of litter, weeds and leaf mulch were removed, which was swept up and carted away.” The Frome Hoedown Group was set up and is managed by Somerset councillor for Frome, Shane Collins.   • Spring comes alive at Vallis Farm Families across Frome are invited to celebrate the arrival of spring with a nature-filled day at Vallis Farm.   • Students celebrate success in technology challenge Frome College’s robotics team achieved major success last month, finishing third in a regional technology challenge and winning a sustainability award. The team attended the South West Regional First Tech Challenge in Bristol, where they were tasked with designing and building a robot capable of collecting and scoring artefacts into a target. The First Tech Challenge is a competition enabling young people to develop skills and broaden understanding of STEM education and career pathways. After repairing some minor damage to their machine upon arrival, the team held first place for most of the day. However, they were beaten in the final round, finishing third overall.
