TWO local music educators, Willow Harwood and Rosanna Schura, have created an intergenerational music group called ‘Singing Social’ that sees the elderly sing songs with pre-schoolers.
Following their belief in the value and importance of music, Willow and Rosanna wanted to bring together the generations, providing an opportunity for different generations to connect over a shared love of music.
Willow Harwood said, “I had seen all over the news about the benefits of intergenerational activities and saw how beneficial music was for elderly people suffering from dementia and decided to create the group.”
The group is run on a voluntary basis at Rossetti House Care Home in Frome. During the group the elderly, parents and pre-schoolers sing both traditional nursery rhymes and also songs from the youth of the older generations too, accompanied by a guitar.
Willow added, “There has been an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the group, with many people being held on waiting lists to get the opportunity to join in. We are hoping for funding to be able to continue the group more regularly and at various different care homes, perhaps ones with less frequent activities”
The group meets on the second Monday of each month with admission being free, however booking is essential. If you are interested in joining please call Willow on 07828 826637.
