A TWELVE-tonne fire engine will be pulled through the streets of Frome by Rachel Clarke and her brothers Daniel and Matthew for We Hear You, in memory of their mother.
The charity says, “Rachel and her brothers sadly lost their mum to leukaemia on 29th May in 2011. Every year since then, on the anniversary of their mum passing away, they set themselves a challenge which will raise money for local charity We Hear You (formerly Positive Action on Cancer – PAC).
“Having pulled a 14-tonne coach for two miles around Frome last year, the threesome were looking for something even crazier to do this time.”
Rachel said, “This year, on the fifth anniversary of mum’s death, we decided to do things differently and asked the public to challenge us, so following a plea through social media, an ex-firefighter, Steve Barham, challenged us to pull a fire engine through Frome. Steve was a fireman from 1974 – 2004 and used to train the Frome crews in the 1980s.
“So at noon on the 29th May we’ll be doing just that, complete with fireman on board. The fire engine weighs 12 tonnes and our team of six have decided on a 5K route through Frome and finishing uphill!
“We’ve set ourselves quite a challenge pulling it for 5K, so the nerves are setting in now. We’ve been training on a trading estate in Frome, pulling each other’s cars and vans, some of which have been loaded with rubble for extra weight. To date, we have raised over £10,000 and for this event we would like to raise £3,000.”
