Bingo fundraiser for local school

SELWOOD Academy’s PTA is hosting a bingo night next week to raise money for the school.

The evening will be held at the school on Berkley Road on Tuesday 1st May. Doors open at 6.30pm and its eyes down at 7pm. Cash prizes up for grabs!

  • Library Friends marks first anniversary A group supporting Frome’s library has marked its first anniversary. Friends of Frome Library (FOFL), a Community Interest Company (CIC), was set up last year by volunteers and library users to fundraise and advocate for the much-loved public space. Chairperson Kerry Meech said the group has had a busy winter. “We’ve been fundraising and chatting with librarians about their wish lists for this year. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve been able to secure much-needed replacement equipment, including a safe and secure Lego storage unit for the popular Lego club and replacement props for the free, librarian-led Toddler Time and Baby Boogie sessions,” she said.   • Valentine lamp lighting ceremony returns this week The annual Valentine lamp lighting ceremony is being held this Saturday 14th February at the top of Catherine Hill. The ceremony sees Frome’s famous Valentine gas lamp lit by Eddie Young, the lamplighter, who will be dressed in period costume and light the lamp using a traditional lamplighter’s pole and read the dedication to St Valentine. Selected poems, on the theme of love, will be performed by the members of the Frome Writers Collective Poetry Group. The event will start at 5.30pm when a Queen of Hearts rocket will be set off and explode in a red heart shape in the sky above the lamp. Read more on our website. The link is in our bio.   • Hopkins strike seals eighth straight home win for Frome Albie Hopkins’ close-range strike bagged all three points for the Robins, Frome’s eighth consecutive home victory. The number 11 had a goal ruled out at the 30-minute mark, his diving effort was flagged by the linesman; after an exchange in words from both Ali and Collier, the goal was disallowed. Yet with the difficult conditions, all three points head to Danny Greaves’ men and with the win secured, this kept the 11-point gap from Malvern Town in second place.   • Last call for the Frome Pancake Dash Pancake day and Valentine’s Day are being marked this month with a family-friendly event in the town centre. On Saturday 14th February, from midday there will be coffee, crêpes, crafts, face painting, a Valentine’s ‘selfie booth’, games, a giveaway of Bonne Maman jam and chocolate spread and a raffle raising funds for Frome Skatepark Project at the Boyle Cross. The Blue House is open from 1pm to 3pm, selling tea and coffee on their forecourt. At 1pm and every five to 10 minutes until 3pm, a series of pancake ‘dashes’ will set off from outside The Blue Boar and makes its way up to the finish line by Boyle Cross. The pancake dashes are for up to six participants at a time and suitable for all ages and abilities. Everyone who takes part can show their medal at the crêpe van to claim a free crêpe with Bonne Maman jam or hazelnut chocolate spread. Read more on our website. The link is in our bio.   • Safety concerns raised over Frome’s ‘pothole epidemic’ Residents in Frome are warning that local roads are becoming increasingly dangerous as potholes grow in number and size. Over 100 residents have contacted the Frome Times with their concerns, with several people reporting damage to vehicles, and one child fracturing his arm after hitting a pothole while cycling. Somerset Councillor Adam Boyden, for Frome North, said the region is facing a ‘pothole epidemic’ and urged residents to keep reporting them. He said, “There are over 3,500 potholes in the system to be dealt with. Nearly 1,000 were reported last weekend. It is just getting worse, it is a bad time with the rain, it’s been cold. On Bath Road there is just a long line of potholes there. It is worth reporting them and not complaining on social media.” A 10-year-old boy, James Yearsley, fractured his arm after hitting a pothole while riding his bike on Woodhayes Road in December. His mum, who said the injury required surgery, said, “I reported this straight away to the Highways Department at Somerset Council as I was so worried someone else would get hurt. They have made a very shoddy repair to the hole which took about three weeks. I am still waiting for a response from their insurance team with regards to compensation.” Read more on our website.   • Dom Joly brings Trigger Happy TV anniversary tour to Frome Comedian Dom Joly will bring his Trigger Happy TV 25th Anniversary Tour to the Cheese and Grain in Frome in November. The tour marks 25 years since Trigger Happy TV first appeared on screens, transforming hidden camera comedy with its surreal sketches and memorable characters. To celebrate the milestone, Dom is taking the show on the road with dates across the country, running from this coming September through to May 2027.   • Frome teen gives back to cancer charity after mum’s diagnosis A teenager in Frome is taking on a daily running challenge and triathlon to help a charity which supported his family when his mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. Finn Molloy, 16, is running 5 km every day throughout February ending with a triathlon to raise funds for We Hear You (WHY) – a cancer counselling charity in Frome. Finn and his family received support from WHY when his mum, Kirsten, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024. The challenge will mark two years since her treatment started. “WHY supported my mum through her breast cancer journey at a time when life felt frightening and overwhelming,” said Finn. “Their counsellors gave her comfort and a place to feel safe, now I’m doing this challenge to give something back to the charity that helped her feel less alone. I am doing my own triathlon as there are none upcoming near me and you need to be 17+ to do an Olympic triathlon, so I will do my swim and run in Frome and cycle elsewhere.” Read more on our website.   • Community hire bikes are coming to Frome Community hire bikes will be coming to Frome later this month following a £15,000 grant from Great Western Railway (GWR). The funding has been awarded to Frome Town Council and will pay for on-street bikes and cargo bikes (designed to carry heavier loads), for community use, as well as new walking and cycling maps linking the railway station to the town centre. The grant was awarded to help improve connectivity between Frome railway station and the town centre, with the aim of increasing footfall around the station and into the heart of the town. The council has teamed up with Frome Community Bike Project to provide the bikes. The bikes are expected to arrive in late February and will be based on Station Approach. A celebration event will be held to showcase the cycling support available in Frome, with opportunities for residents to find out how to hire and use the bikes. Read more on our website.
