Books and pudding; what more can you want?!

‘Proof’ copies (also known as Advance Reading Copies or ARCs) are produced by publishers to encourage pre-publication reviews and entice booksellers to stock and support key titles, explains the team at Frome’s own bookshop, Hunting Raven in Cheap Street.

“But with a tiny team of four booksellers, there’s only so much ground we at Hunting Raven can cover by ourselves,” they say. “And that’s why we’ve formed a Proof Pudding Club. The idea is to open up the reviewing and recommending process to fellow book lovers of Frome.

“How it works: Book your place, pop into the shop on Cheap Street, and receive an exclusive wrapped proof. Enclosed with each proof is a blank review card. Write a short review and bring it along on the night.

“At the book club – which will take place in the comfort of the Gin Lounge upstairs at The Cornerhouse – we will chat about the books we’ve read and share reviews. Then pudding will be served (courtesy of Keren Hayden of Events Horizon).

“The Proof Pudding Club is a great way to find out about new releases, discover new authors and meet some lovely people.”

The Proof Pudding Club will take place on the second Sunday of each month. The first one will be Sunday 14 April in the Gin Lounge at The Cornerhouse. Tickets are £8 and include access to an exclusive proof plus pudding on the night. Book tickets by popping into the shop, calling 01373 473111, emailing winstonebooks3@gmail.com or directly online at www.bit.ly/ProofPuddingClub

“Spaces are strictly limited, so book early to avoid disappointment – and don’t forget to let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements so we can do our best to cater for you.”

  • Musicians launch Frome’s own record label

A new record label has launched in Frome to support musicians in the town and across the South West.

IL Records has been founded by two local residents, Jonah Brody and Henry Gibbs, who bring professional music industry experience to the venture. The pair are passionate about helping local artists—particularly young musicians—release albums and take the next steps in their careers.

“There are so many musicians in Frome and across the South West,” said Jonah, a professional musician and composer with 20 years’ touring experience, including performing with bands like Depeche Mode as a keyboard and bass player.

“Frome has long been a magnet for artists, a town where creativity is a way of life. IL Records is here to keep that story moving and to make sure the music being made here finds the audience it deserves.

“The main reason for launching the label was because when I was starting out, it was amazing when you found someone who would be like, ‘Wow that’s interesting’ let me give you a boost. When you are starting, you want to get signed by someone but that’s often further down the line or harder these days. I am trying to give back a little bit and give people a little encouragement to keep on doing what they are doing.”

  • Frome continues VE Day 80th anniversary commemorations

Frome is continuing its VE Day 80th anniversary commemorations with a series of community events on Thursday 8th May, marking the end of fighting in Europe during the Second World War.

On Thursday, residents are invited to a host of activities including a 1940s-themed ‘Songs and Scones’ event, a parade to St John’s Church re-enacting the historic procession of 8th May 1945, and a thanksgiving service using the original Victory Order of Service.

  • Campaigners urge community support in final bid to save Packsaddle Fields

A local campaign group is calling for community support in a last-ditch effort to save the green fields at Packsaddle from housing development.

People for Packsaddle, who have led the campaign to protect the site on Frome’s northern edge, are preparing to contest a developer’s appeal after Somerset Council rejected a plan to build 74 houses on the land. A public hearing is due to take place in August.

The group has registered as a ‘Rule 6 Party’, meaning it will take an active role in the appeal process – submitting evidence, questioning the developer, and presenting its case alongside the council.

  • Town council in talks with potential new operator for Badgers Hill Stadium

A potential new operator is in talks with Frome Town Council to take over the running of Badgers Hill Stadium, after efforts to run the site through a Community Benefit Society struggled to gain momentum.

Badgers Hill Stadium, home of Frome Town FC, was saved from repossession in 2022 when Frome Town Council paid off the club’s substantial debts, securing an option to buy the ground for £1, which it exercised in 2023.

The stadium was then handed to the newly-formed Frome Town Community Benefit Society (CBS) to manage it as a community asset.

However, speaking at a full council meeting on Wednesday 30th April, the council’s economic development manager and deputy town clerk Peter Wheelhouse said, “It has proved difficult for the CBS to gain traction in its efforts to manage and develop the stadium as a sporting and community asset and recently, the council has been in discussion with a potential new operator about the possibility of them taking on that responsibility.

  • Dissenters’ Cemetery comes to life with Walk ‘n’ Talk sessions

The Frome Dissenters’ Cemetery held a Walk ‘n’ Talk recently, sharing historical facts about the cemetery and stories from the past.

The walk was led by the secretary to the cemetery trustees, James Parsons, and was also attended by Frome’s mayor, Cllr Andy Jones.

Trustee Lockhart Murdoch said, “Jim’s thorough and detailed knowledge of the cemetery and many of its illustrious occupants was shared with all and much appreciated. This day also happened to coincide with the death anniversary of one of our war graves, Private Percy Coward of the Machine Gun Corps, who died in 1918. The mayor laid a wreath in his honour.”

  • Students shine in their first-ever Great Big School Clean

Students from Fromefield Manor School took part in their first-ever Great Big School Clean recently helping to clean and tidy up the school grounds.

Armed with pickers and bags supplied by Frome Town Council, they worked together to collect rubbish and make their environment cleaner and greener.

The Great Big School Clean initiative is run by the Keep Britain Tidy campaign and is part of the Eco-Schools programme which supports the school as they work towards their Green Flag Award.

A spokesperson for the school, Liz Andrew, said, “The pupils take great pride in their school and enjoyed working hard to keep it clean and tidy. Their dedication shows how much they value their school and want to make it a better place for everyone.”

  • From The Mayor

We have been away in Germany over Easter, visiting family and eating chocolate, but the week before was fairly busy, even by my standards!

It was a great pleasure to open the exciting and thought-provoking festival of photography that is Photo|Frome.

Photo|Frome is now in its third edition and we are delighted to see this event, showcasing the work of photographers, nationally and internationally known, added to Frome’s calendar of cultural events. It’s one of the things that gives our small town such a great reputation, a varied cultural life and helps us punch well above our weight on the national stage.

This year’s theme of inequality reminds us all of the problems here and around the globe, which affect disadvantaged people and communities. Many of us have been upset and angry to see Britain’s budget for overseas aid drastically cut, and the US has done the same.

The ladies’ team then played their first match of the season against the B team in the Bristol & District Alliance league at Long Ashton.

“What an amazing start to the new season of golf at Orchardleigh, with the course looking so good and it’s dry,” says a member of the group, Sarah Doble.
