Mother’s Day next week will see sons and daughters across the country pampering their mums in their own special way. But what of the other female role-models in our lives, should we be spoiling them too?
The age old proverb says, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ and for every mother there could be an auntie, grandmother or stepmother who has played a vital role in our lives, and who deserves a bit of extra love and attention on this special day.
Mother’s Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate mums in the traditional sense, but it also provides us with the opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for the love, care, mentorship, guidance and inspiration that all female role-models bring to our lives.
It doesn’t always have to be about the women who are related to us, they could be women in the community such as foster mothers, teachers, youth group leaders and if you’re old enough, maybe its the local pub landlady who offers you a friendly ear, support and guidance when you need it most.
No matter who they are, use Mother’s Day next week to say thank you to the women who have shown you the unconditional love and support when you most need it.
As for how you show your gratitude, there are many ways, big and small, which can show that person how much you care. Here are some tips on how to treat that special someone.
• Take them for a day out. You don’t have to spend lots of money, it could be something as simple as a walk out in the countryside or along the canal, with cake and tea at the end as a reward for burning off all those calories.
• For gift ideas The Golden Goose, Amica, Bonbon Chic and Steve Bane Fabrics all have something a little different on offer.
• For something different, Enigma Pottery is offering gift vouchers for creative experiences for anyone wanting to try their hand at making a pot or sculpture and explore a possible new hobby.
• Gift vouchers are also on offer from local salon Sassy if you want to treat your mother to a new hairstyle.
• If music and entertainment is more their thing, you could buy them a ticket to the latest show at the Cheese & Grain, Frome Memorial Theatre or the Merlin Theatre, who have everything on offer from veteran Merseybeat rockers The Searchers, opera performances, Leo Sayer and Strictly Come Dancing’s very own Pasha coming to town.
• There are lots of delicious treats on offer in the local area to satisfy the foodie within. The Walled Garden at Orchardleigh Restaurant is hosting a Mother’s Day carvery with all the trimmings and the Somerset Arms in Maiden Bradley have all the classic pub favourites on offer to satisfy all appetites.
• Most importantly, show them that you care with a simple thank you. You don’t have to spend lots of money to treat the special woman in your life, sometimes our time and attention is the most precious thing that we can give.
