THE Merlin has plenty to do for children and families over the next couple of months, whether taking part or sitting back and watching!
With drama groups, live theatre, and a magical Christmas performance of ‘The Wind in the Willows’ in the works, there is something for children of all ages.
Drama groups
The theatre says, “The Merlin drama youth groups will recommence again after a successful live summer term. The groups running on Tuesdays are the Musical Theatre Club for 7-12 yrs; and the Youth Theatre group for 12-16 yrs.
“The Musical Theatre Club focuses on technique and building confidence in the performing arts. Students will learn song and dance routines from well-known musicals and pop songs. The Youth Theatre group explores a range of drama techniques, including character work and interpreting scripts, steering original ideas towards creating a quality public performance.
“On Saturdays it is the turn for the Drama Club for 8–12 yrs. This group builds a serious enthusiasm for the performing arts! In a session that is great for making friends and building confidence, you will learn a whole host of drama techniques, then work on devising your own piece of wonderful, creative and imaginative theatre.”
“Groups resumed last week for a 11 week term. Full details of the groups are on the Merlin website. Please email merlintheatreproductions@gmail.com to request a registration form. Places are limited.”
Live theatre
The theatre says, “There is also a chance to watch live theatre, as children’s theatre company Scarlet Oak Theatre presents ‘The Zoo That Comes To You’ on Saturday 9th October at 2pm.
“’The Zoo That Comes To You’ follows the impassioned attempts of two animal enthusiasts to share their love of and concern for animals with the world. They have spent the last eight years taking in animals that need respite, care or a temporary home and have, accidentally, ended up with a sanctuary full of animals.
“However, no-one has come to visit their zoo! So everybody – animal and human alike – has decided it is time to get out, see the world, and bring the zoo to you. Come and meet this eclectic group of charming yet cheeky animals, as they discuss their life experiences and the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world dominated by humans. These animals have a lot to say and want to inspire people of all ages to take action, because they know small actions can make a big difference in the world.
“Featuring puppetry, live music and playful characters, Scarlet Oak Theatre welcomes you to join the conversation about animal conservation.”
Christmas show
“The Merlin’s Christmas show is the timeless classic ‘The Wind in The Willows’ adapted by Julian Fellows (Downton Abbey) for this wonderful musical play.
“This riotous comedy follows Mole, Rat, Badger, and the impulsive Mr. Toad, whose insatiable need for speed lands him in serious trouble,” says the theatre.
“With his beloved home under threat from the notorious Chief Weasel and his gang of sinister Wild Wooders, Toad must attempt a daring escape leading to a series of misadventures and a heroic battle to recapture Toad Hall.
“Full of humour, wit, a gorgeous, soaring score and heart-warming lessons of friendship, ‘The Wind In The Willows’ is the perfect way for families to kick start their festive season!
“The show runs from 8th – 11th December and includes a ‘relaxed’ performance on Saturday 11th at 10am. Tickets start from £9.50 and can be booked online or call the Box office 01373 465949.”
