PLANS to re-open Frome’s Westway Cinema are still on track despite a fire in the building last month.
New owners, S&B Cinemas, have assured the public that the refurbishment of the cinema is still going ahead and hope to open the doors early next year.
Pat Scott who runs the company told the Frome Times, “There was a break-in at the cinema and a small fire was started, but everything is fine. There was a little bit of damage but the team have been in and sorted it out.”
A police investigation is under way into the fire as it is thought to have been started deliberately.
Pat said, “I can’t comment on how the fire started – the police are dealing with it.”
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said, “We’re investigating a fire at the Westway Cinema in Cork Street, Frome, which is being treated as suspicious.
“The fire was reported to us by the fire and rescue service at 1.36am on Sunday 23rd October.
“Forensic enquiries have been carried out at the scene and our enquiries are ongoing.
“We’d like to speak to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area, on Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday. If you can help, please call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5216235949.”
