HEAD to the Masonic Hall in Frome on Saturday 4th February for a jumble sale in aid of We Hear You (WHY).

The event will start at 10.30am to 1pm. Chief executive of We Hear You Lucy Kitchener said, “People can expect lots of good quality and clean clothes, toys and teddies, bric a brac, shoes and books plus home-made cake, tea and coffee all at extremely reasonable prices. And we encourage people to bring a bag they can fill!”

Entry costs 50p and children are free; Cakes and refreshments will be available from £1.

We Hear You provide free emotional support for patients, families, friends and carers who have been affected or bereaved by cancer or any other life-threatening condition, across Frome, Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset and Wiltshire.

  • Action-packed June for Frome Running Club June saw some incredible performances from Frome Running Club members, under at times challenging conditions with high temperatures throughout the month. Things got off to a speedy start on 1st June with the Gloucester 10K. Frome runner Daniel Thomson (MSEN) took to the starting line in the historic town of Crewkerne, finishing in 00:45:25. The next highlight in the June calendar was the AVR Westbury 5K, the second in the 2025 series of four races, and race three in the Wiltshire Road Race League. Frome fielded a strong team with Alexander Fisher (MV40) finishing first in 00:18:05, followed by Daniel Thomson (MSEN) in 00:20:24, Keith Vance (MV50) in 00:20:34, and Barrie Knight (MV70), whose time of 00:23:29 earned him first in age category.   • Volunteer for Frome’s Healthy Homes team Residents are invited to sign up to become Energy Champions and ensure that local people get the energy support they need. The Healthy Homes team at Frome Town Council are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join as Energy Champions to support people with lowering energy bills, dealing with energy debt and increasing energy efficiency and retrofitting homes. Energy advice volunteer co-ordinator, Caroline Wajsblum, said, “With just a few simple changes, most homes in Frome can be adapted into cooler spaces in summer, warmer havens in winter and drier throughout the year - helping households to save money, cut carbon, improve health and feel more comfortable every day.” Healthy Homes is part of Green and Healthy Frome, a collaboration between Frome Medical Practice, Edventure and Frome Town Council, and funded by the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund (CAF). The team is also supported by the Centre for Sustainable Energy and the Centre for Energy Equality. Caroline said, “Joining the crew means becoming part of a friendly and supportive team. Full training will be provided and hours of volunteering, whether daytime or evening, can be flexible so everyone is very welcome. “As an Energy Champion you will provide energy advice to groups and individuals with initiatives such as regular drop-in energy sessions, pop up outreach events, phone calls and home visits.” Cllr Fiona Barrows said, “If you can spare some time and would like to make a difference to people’s lives in our town, reducing their energy bills and lowering their carbon footprint, we would love to hear from you.” To ask any questions about the role or to apply send a CV and cover letter to cwajsblum@frometowncouncil.gov.uk.   • From The Mayor Anita is away enjoying some sunshine, so she’s asked me, Cllr Fiona Barrows, to stand in and write the mayor’s column this week. Like Anita, I was recently elected to a new role as chair and leader of Frome Town Council. Usually in a town council, the ‘chair is the mayor’ but at Frome Town Council we’re taking a different approach. Anita, as deputy chair of Frome Town Council, is taking on the civic leadership role as mayor; attending events, meeting residents and community groups and writing this column (usually!) My role as chair and leader is about political leadership and chairing council meetings. I’m looking forward to working closely with Anita this year - we share an enthusiasm for giving young people a real voice in our town.   • Rainbow Paradiso brings glamour and fun to Frome Festival Frome is set to sparkle on Tuesday 8th July as Rainbow Paradiso, a dazzling cabaret night, takes over the Cheese and Grain main stage for an evening of music, comedy and colour. The show, which has already wowed audiences in Bath at Komedia, is on Tuesday 8th July and features professional artists, including local band Sweet Machine and the Frome Show Choir. Leading the night is international queen of charisma, Kiki Babs, who promises glamour, laughter and a chance for the audience to shine with fun games and a lip sync challenge (yes, there are prizes!). Kiki will be joined by the seriously amusing Professor of Whimsy, Robert Garnham, and LED acrobatic dancer, Ember Elation, bringing visual magic to the evening. Sweet Machine is a Frome Festival favourite with gigs at the Silk Mill and the Tree House, fresh from the Brighton Fringe Festival. This locally-based band plays original 80s influenced electro-pop, think Pet Shop Boys meets Human League, but are not averse to a bit of Kylie and are known to indulge in the Time Warp! The Frome Show Choir will join the band to perform Sweet Machine’s new single, the Rainbow Paradiso anthem, and are looking forward to the chance to display their musical magic to a wider audience. Local DJ Tashphrodisiac ends the night with a chance to boogie. “It’s going to be bright, loud and fun,” says the organisers. “All are encouraged to enter into the spirit and let their hair down.   • Local causes hit the jackpot with Frome Community Lottery grants Frome Community Lottery has awarded around £4,500 to six local organisations at an annual awards evening last month. The beneficiaries this year were Frome Town Band, Frome Festival, Cultivating Community, Frome Memorial Theatre, Fair Frome and Frome Birth Talk. Representatives from each of these organisations received their cheques from chair Lorna Lewis. One of the trustees, Richard Aspray, said, “We are proud to be able to support these fantastic local community groups, but we wouldn’t be able to do this without the contributions of our lottery players. The more players we have, the more local causes we can support.” During the event, each organisation described their role in supporting the local community and talked about what they would be spending their money on.   • Local school supports children’s wellbeing with new initiative A Frome primary school is embarking on a new initiative to help children understand how their brains work and support emotional wellbeing, following a recent funding boost. Berkley First School has received funding for two years to implement myHappymind, an NHS-backed programme delivering interactive lessons in which children learn about their brains and emotional wellbeing. “The aim is to help them process their thoughts and feelings, and each child is provided with a journal to record their reflections from the lessons,” explained headteacher Suzanne Thompson. “We are thrilled to have been awarded funding. The initiative will support the children in developing positive skills and habits to become their very best selves.” Parents can join in on the journey too, with the myHappymind parent app. Suzanne said, “This app will help parents understand what their child is learning and provide activities they can do together at home.   • Let’s make Frome more seedy LAST year we invited Frome gardeners to share their thoughts on their gardening year. When asked, ‘Do you save seed from any of your plants?’, just under 30% replied that they always saved seed each year. Well, here at the Frome Seed Library, we’re on a mission to encourage more people to save seed, but where to begin? Thankfully, some of the easiest plants to save seed from also happen to be the tastiest. These include peas, French beans, lettuce, peppers, chillies and tomatoes. These generally self-pollinate, so there is very little chance of cross-pollination; the seed you will save will be true to the parent plant (this won’t be the case for F1 varieties, so check that the plant you wish to save seed from isn’t F1 – it will say on the original seed packet).   • Uncover the town’s rich connections to TV and film with guided walking tour A guided walking tour around Frome, which follows in the footsteps of television luminaries including Reginald Perrin, Poldark and Nessa from Gavin & Stacey, is due to run this month. Join local historian David Lassman as he uncovers the town’s rich and surprising connections to the world of film and television through a guided walking tour, which takes place on 3rd, 17th and 25th June. “Frome has played host to a remarkable range of film and television productions over the years, from classic BBC dramas to modern ITV adaptations,” said David, who has himself appeared on television and in film many times. The 90-minute tour will reveal local landmarks and hidden corners where iconic scenes were filmed, such as Gentle Street, used in Jane Austen’s Sanditon. David will also share behind-the-scenes stories, reveal the name of a Frome-born Oscar winner, and explore the town’s ‘bizarre’ association with a BBC primetime show.   • Merlin Theatre hosts a packed line-up of summer shows The Merlin Theatre has a packed line-up of exciting shows and performances this summer inside the venue and outside at the ECOS outdoor amphitheatre. From Shakespeare to Jane Austen, the theatre has also become the first in the UK to have obtained the rights to stage a community production of Come From Away, a captivating and a heart-warming story of people who found themselves, on the day of 9/11, stranded on the airport runways of Newfoundland. ECOS amphitheatre This year’s open-air programme includes one of the country’s most sought-after touring bluegrass and Americana bands, Buffalo Gals, who are based in Frome. This much-loved act, featuring their Appalachian clogging step-dancer, will be playing a Sunday Social special on the afternoon of 20th July, as part of the theatre’s ‘Made In Frome’ season. This is followed by Shakespeare, a classic theatre tradition, which will be presented on the afternoon of Saturday 9th August by Folksy Theatre with Twelfth Night, preceded on the evening of Wednesday 6th August by Immersion Theatre’s family-friendly, suitable for children 8+, version of The Tempest. The award-winning, international touring experts, Illyria Theatre, will be bringing Lizzy and Mr Darcy to the stage in August with Pride and Prejudice, “celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th birthday at her vibrant and often venomous best,” said the Merlin Theatre director Claudia Pepler. Inside the Merlin Merlin Theatre Productions has become the first in the UK to have obtained the rights to stage a community production of Come From Away.
