THE Memorial Theatre lineup is jam-packed with music and entertainment for the start of the year.

Saturday 2nd February  7.30pm ABBA Forever Live In Concert. SOLD OUT. The unique Abba look and sound is replicated with an incredible attention to detail as the beautiful lyrics penned by Benny and Bjorn are sung in wonderful harmony by all six performers on stage. Dynamic non-stop choreography, stunning visuals, top-class musicianship and an all-live performance ensures that the Tribute to ABBA Forever Show captivates audiences from the opening refrain to the final sing-along chorus of this two-hour spectacular.

Friday 15th February 7.30pm Toyah: Acoustic, Up Close and Personal. Household name, pop icon, TV presenter, and stage/ screen actress (Calamity Jane, Cabaret, Peter Pan, Jubilee, Quadophenia) Toyah comes to the theatre this February with her Acoustic, Up Close & Personal show.

This is a unique chance to experience Toyah in an intimate setting where music and stories take centre stage. This lively, entertaining and revealing show comes in the form of Toyah performing an unplugged set of her well-loved hits and classic songs, alongside recalling stories from her colourful, 35-year career. From filming pop videos on horseback at 5am in the morning to acting alongside Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier, this is a show which lifts the lid on working in the entertainment business.

A talented duo of guitarists, Chris Wong and Colin Hinds, accompany Toyah on meticulous and melodic acoustic versions of the hits It’s A Mystery, Thunder In The Mountains, I Want To Be Free and Good Morning Universe through to Sensational, a track used recently on a national TV advertising campaign starring Patsy Kensit.

2015 saw Toyah act in the acclaimed cult British feature film Ahhhhhhhh! directed by Steve Oram, whilst 2016 also saw the release of more films in which Toyah has roles; Extremis, Lies We Tell and Kaleidoscope Man alongside Hound. As ever, Toyah’s annual concert diary is also packed with summer festivals, acoustic shows and electric gigs with her full band. Her transatlantic rock band The Humans featuring Bill Rieflin (King Crimson, REM) and Chris Wong recently released their third album Strange Tales. Tickets £22, concessions £20.

The unparalleled catalogue of music that Buddy Holly left behind has entertained, inspired and moved every subsequent generation to laughter, tears and an irrepressible desire to dance!  Producer Simon Fielder of Simon Fielder Productions, a former actor in the original touring and West End show said, “I’m so lucky to present shows that feature people and subjects about which I am really passionate. Buddy Holly was pivotal in my development as a guitarist and songwriter. Buddy’s music has touched the heart of millions around the world and influenced many famous artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Brian May and many others. This year is especially poignant and will be a show to remember.”

Buddy Holly and The Cricketers is a dynamic show featuring authentic arrangements, driving rhythms, energetic performances and skilled musicianship that has audiences dancing in the aisles. It has been delighting audiences for 26 years and has performed in many locations around the world including Europe and a tour of the US. The show stars some of the finest actor-musicians in the UK including Jason Shaw as Buddy and was endorsed as Britain’s most popular Buddy Holly act when the show appeared on BBC One’s The One and Only, with Graham Norton notably commenting that they were “Buddy Brilliant.”

“The show has always presented Buddy in the style of show we feel he would perform today. Authentic arrangements, driving rhythms, energetic performances and wonderful musicianship, all delivered with charm and humour.  Whatever the season, whatever the excuse to party, make your Heartbeat a little faster with the show that has thousands of fans the world over saying:  “I can’t believe it’s not Buddy!”

Saturday 16th March 7.30pm- Gaelforce Dance. Gaelforce Dance, the International phenomenal Irish dance show is delighted to be performing in the UK in 2019, to once again enchant audiences nationwide.

Gaelforce Dance, the celebration of Irish dance, music and song, has dynamically tapped its way into the beating hearts of millions of audience members worldwide since its inception in 1999. This dance spectacular has enjoyed tremendous success on a global scale performing in over 30 countries, across 4 continents and playing to over 2 million people.

Gaelforce Dance is the story of two lovers, Lorcan and Aisling who, as our tale begins, are blissfully unaware of the passion that will erupt between them, leading the lovers into a maelstrom of forbidden love and their community into a cauldron of hate. As the story begins, a chance meeting sparks the ill-fated affair where broken loyalties and jealousy tear two brothers apart. Only after the ultimate tragedy are the brothers once more united.

Produced by Michael Durkan and choreographed by Richard Griffin, Gaelforce Dance is a highly acclaimed show that expertly weaves intricate choreography, thundering rhythms, enchanting melodies and a compelling storyline into a stirring tale of love, passion and tragedy. It is due to these incredibly innovative elements that in 2010 Gaelforce Dance was the winner of IQ Magazine’s ‘Limelight Award’ for Best Dance Spectacular beating all other Irish dance shows in its category.

2019 will be an exciting new year for Gaelforce Dance, with exhilarating new choreography and the inclusion of new dance numbers. This year Gaelforce Dance is going to be bigger and brighter, with glittering new production, exciting new costumes and electrifying music and songs. “We aim to be different from other shows; we are more theatrical. We operate by a very sharp edge which it is very challenging for our dancers, but the experience of our show is irreplaceable and much more emotional and immediate,” says Richard Griffin.

“Gaelforce Dance takes the audience right to the edge with its perfect mix of traditional and contemporary Irish dance music. It fuses a classic love tale in a spectacle of star studded quality that is Irish dancing at its raw and energetic best.”

Tickets £22, Concessions £18

  • Strong start to spring for family support charity

Spring has sprung for family support charity Purple Elephant, with a series of endurance-based fundraising events, including a military-inspired bootcamp and the Bath Half Marathon.

Starting in the dark at 6am on 22nd February the military-inspired bootcamp in Beckington raised £2,000. 110 participants, including children took part in a wide variety of classes.

Led by Optimum Health and Sports Therapy practitioner Lizzie Daschner with fellow fitness fanatics Emily Denham and Mitz Harrington, supporters cheered participants on, donated and joined the raffle to ensure a fun day for all.

Local traffic management and road-surfacing company CH Contracting (South West) Ltd match-funded the move-athon event and have donated a further £2,000.

  • Somerset Council increases precept by 4.99%

Somerset Council has agreed to increase council tax by 4.99% when it met to approve its budget for 2026/27.

At the Full Council meeting on 4th March councillors agreed to increase council tax by 4.99%, meaning the average Band D bill will rise to £1,950.30 per year (an increase of £1.78 per week).

The council says this figure remains lower than the average unitary council, and less than neighbours in Dorset, Wiltshire and Cornwall.

Speaking at the meeting, the leader of Somerset Council, Cllr Bill Revans, said the council is moving from financial emergency into a financial recovery phase.

He said, “Experts agree that this council has grasped the challenges of the financial emergency.

“We have taken the tough decisions needed whilst prioritising care for the most vulnerable and front line services, working in partnership with our business community, city, town and parish councils, the health service, the police and other public sector organisations as well as the Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise sector – and we will continue to do so."

  • Have your say on proposed changes to Frome school system

Residents are being encouraged to share their views as part of an informal consultation into whether Frome schools should move to a two-tier education system.

The Somerset Council consultation ends on 20th March and is seeking residents’ views on Frome schools moving from a three-tier to a two-tier system. If the consultation shows community support, a full statutory consultation with detailed proposals would be developed and launched in June/July.

A two-tier system would mean pupils would join a primary school aged four before moving to secondary school in Year 7. The majority of schools in Frome currently operate a three-tier system, with pupils attending first schools (Reception to Year 4), middle schools (Years 5 to 8) and an upper school (Years 9 to 13).

  • Frome business breakfast with Mayday Saxonvale

A Frome business breakfast is being held at The Cheese and Grain on Thursday 19th March with Mayday Saxonvale.

Frome & District Chamber of Commerce are hosting the breakfast entitled The Future of Frome Business Breakfast.

It is an opportunity for Frome businesses to hear directly from Mayday Saxonvale about their plans for community ownership of the site and the progress they are making in the acquisition of the site from Somerset Council. The group will also share how they can directly engage and help influence the future of the town.

Organisers say the significant development planned across the town raises key questions about balancing business growth, employment space and long-term economic activity with housing and other uses, giving local business owners a stronger voice in shaping the town’s economic future, and ensuring that businesses, talent and investment remain rooted in Frome for the long term.

Highlights include the Annual Kindness Festival Lecture with time traveller and community activist Rob Hopkins at The Memorial Theatre, who will invite residents to imagine a society in 2036 reoriented around kindness and care.

Festival Director Alison Murdoch said, “With everything that’s going on in the world, we need kindness more than ever and this year’s Kindness Festival aims to provide exactly that, whether it’s in the form of singing, dancing, music and comedy or thought-provoking workshops, talks and street events.”

  • Frome Rotary supports skatepark project

The Rotary Club of Frome have joined forces with Frome Skatepark Project and Frome Town Council to help raise £400,000 to create a new skatepark in the Mary Baily playing field.

The project will replace the existing skatepark following a public consultation. The current facility, built 13 years ago, is said to be ‘nearing the end of its life.’

The council says that the Rotary Club of Frome’s participation in the project not only provides greatly increased capacity for the group’s fundraising but also means donations towards the skate park are eligible for Gift Aid, with the potential to generate an additional 25p for every pound donated.

Frome Town Council’s Lead Councillor for the project, Cllr Polly Lamb, said, “Huge thanks to Richard Lines and everyone at Rotary for pledging their support and helping us create this amazing new facility for Frome. Look out for information about loads of fundraising events in the pipeline, including screenings, music events and a deck auction – and if you haven’t shared your thoughts on the design yet, you have until 13th March to complete the survey online, or come and talk to us in person at the town hall on Friday 13th March from 3pm to 7.30pm.”

  • Frome family takes on 26 challenges for Motor Neurone Disease

A Frome family is taking on 26 challenges in 2026 to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease charities, after their mum was diagnosed with the illness.

From marathons and triathlons to a silent touch rugby match, the family hopes their efforts will show how MND affects patients, while supporting the charities Motor Neurone Disease Association, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and 4Ed.

Local resident Dominic Jones said his mother, Nicola Jones, received her MND diagnosis in May last year. He explained, “We’ve got a whole host of Snowdonia challenges, various triathlons, functional fitness challenges and we have also got a darts challenge because of the element of motor skills and motor movements. I chose to do 26 challenges because it is 2026.”

Dominic will also be running the Bath Half Marathon in March and a 70-mile Ultra Marathon in 24 hours later in the year. For some of the running challenges, he will be wearing a breathing apparatus raising awareness of how MND affects patients’ breathing.
