ANOTHER excellent performance from Frome Town and a goal from Matt Smith saw them win 1-0 at Corby Town, making it five wins from the last six and three successive clean sheets for the rejuvenated side.
Frome started with the same line up as in their previous two matches, with Swindon loan signing Mark Francis returning to the squad after injury and starting on the bench.
The first significant action of the match came in the 9th minute as Darren Chitty saved low down from a drive by Tommy Wright, but Frome also went close four minutes later as a Ben Wood corner was headed into the danger area by Tim Stephenson, Ricky Hulbert brought a save from Paul Walker and Ben Thomson slightly under hit the rebound allowing a clearance.
Mark Francis came on in the 15th minute to replace the injured Josh Ford, with Jon Vance taking over the skipper’s armband, and it was Vance who almost opened the scoring a few minutes later as he brought an excellent save from Walker after he had been set up with the chance by Cooper and Hulbert combining well.
Corby’s Greg Mills saw a left wing cross shave the Frome bar in the 33rd, but it was Frome who went closest to breaking the deadlock on the stroke of half time, but Walker threw himself to his right to deny Francis with a super save.
Matt Smith hammered a 25 yarder against the home bar just after the restart, and after Chitty had produced a smart save to deny Wright following a rare home attack, in the 79th minute Smith was on hand to drive the ball home low and hard after Ben Thomson had produced a powerful run into the box and pulled the ball back invitingly for the midfielder.
Frome closed out the game in the last 10 minutes denying the hosts a hint of a goal, and with the three points won, their relentless climb up the table under Adrian Foster and Paul Thorpe continues.
Kris Miller was awarded the “H&B Tyres Man of the Man Award” after another excellent display by the right winger.
