A NEW volunteer group is looking for new members to help raise money for the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group to improve cancer treatment in the area.
The fundraising group covers Frome, Shepton Mallet, Radstock and Midsomer Norton.
Bath Cancer Unit Support Group is a local charity, run entirely by volunteers. Its main object is to raise funds to improve the treatment of cancer patients at the RUH in Bath.
It comprises a committee of trustees who meet regularly to administer the charity, including meeting with health professionals to review their requests for funding.
The charity has many supporters throughout the RUH area, which extends to Warminster in the east and Wells in the south. These supporters, very successfully, raise funds in numerous ways from sponsored walks etc to dances and race nights.
That success enabled the charity in 2016 to pay £1.2million for the purchase of a PET-CT scanner for the RUH, the first district hospital in the UK to have one. This has considerably enhanced the diagnosis of cancers and improved many treatments.
The charity also has some corporate supporters which leads employees at some companies in the area to join together to raise funds, often supported by their employers.
In addition to the main committee, there has been area fund raising committees. A very successful one based in Trowbridge and the immediately surrounding towns has raised considerable sums for the charity over many years. The branch organises fund raising events, but also frequently helps individuals and groups who get in touch to organise events etc. Many former patients and their relatives contact the charity wanting to do something to raise funds.
Anyone who would like more information or who would like to join the new local group, should contact the chairman Mike Taylor on 07714 087102 or chair man@bcusg.org.
