Frome Community Education courses will soon be back up and running with classes starting from 23rd September.
Frome Community Education is a not-for-profit, Community Interest Company, founded in 2011 to provide classes for adults who like to learn for pleasure. It is run by a team of volunteer directors who aim to keep classes accessible and affordable to all.
Programme manager Pia McGee says the courses are selling ‘unusually’ fast. She said, “If you are wanting to learn something new with us this term, please book your place as soon as possible! Some of our art and creative writing classes have sold out and others have very limited availability. With over 48 courses running this term and eight one-day workshops, some from as little as £18, we are confident that there is a course for everyone but only if you book!”
New courses this term reflect an increased focus on culture and words and literature. New tutor, Harriet Derioz, is offering two literature inspired courses, ‘Macbeth – Misogyny, Magic And Macabre’ as well as ‘Five Contemporary Novels And Their Classic Inspirations.’ Local author and historian, David Lassman, will present weekly courses on ‘A Social History Of Britain in the 1960s and 70s,’ ‘Myths And Legends of Britain,’ ‘Myths and Legends Of Ancient Greece,’ ‘Popular Music, A Social History’, ‘Radicalism, Reform and Revolution,’ and two Saturday workshops ‘In the Footsteps Of Christina Rosetti’ and ‘Famous Frome: Film And TV Locations.’
“At the time of writing, there are still a few places available on all of the above,” says Pia.
Other new courses with some spaces available include Roz Sunley’s ‘Contemporary Issues For Enquiring Minds,’ a lively and stimulating current affairs style class, Graham Burgess’ ‘Philosophy – Finding Meaning In Life,’ and new tutor, Helena Softley’s ‘Dancing for Wellbeing And Joy.’
Frome Community Education also provides free classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am to 12 noon at the Cheese and Grain for those who need help with computers, filling out online (or paper) forms or for those who struggle with reading and writing.
These classes will also start back on 23rd September. Free classes coordinator, Richard Ackroyd, looks forward to welcoming anyone in need of help and support.
He said, “We will try to help everyone with simple IT problems. Sessions can get busy, so please be patient or come back later on. Remember that most things online these days require a password and a mobile device, so try to bring these and relevant ID with you. It’s not possible for us to do repairs or print multiple or really long documents but we will do our best to help!”
