THE days are shorter, the sky is darker, but the Cheese and Grain will be brighter than ever!

Throughout the whole of December, the Cheese and Grain will nightly become the largest advent calendar in Somerset. The public will be able to experience a light symphony projected onto the building, synchronized in time with festive classics from over the years.

The venue is also introducing a new Frost Fair Christmas market. The Cheese and Grain façade will dance, flash and be brought to life with a triumphant wash of colour and shapes, with a different Christmas theme every day, showcasing a 10-minute light show looping every 20 minutes, as we countdown to Christmas

The Cheese and Grain says, “Visitors will not only be able to experience the daily spectacular Christmas light show, they will also be able to indulge in homemade treats and grab some Christmas goodies for their loved ones from our very own Frost Fair, a brand new Christmas market taking place in the heart of Frome.

“The Frost Fair, situated alongside the Cheese & Grain, will consist of a variety of stalls selling Christmas gifts and produce. Each stall will be under cover and dressed to look like a Christmas chalet, turning the whole area into a unique winter wonderland; the public will be able to watch the amazing light and music display, then potter around our newly-created Frost Fair, surrounded by a veritable feast of festive goodies. There will be a bar, cocktails, food stands, workshops, children’s activities, and even occasional visits from Santa himself!

“The light show and Frost Fair will happening alongside the regular markets, concerts and World Cup coverage taking place inside the Cheese and Grain throughout December.

From the 19th of December the venue will also be offering three nightly sessions of winter roller discos in the Cheese and Grain hall up until Christmas eve.

  • Players prepare for 24-hour charity ‘bowl-a-thon’

Two members of a Frome bowls club will be rolling up their sleeves – and rolling out their bowls – for a 24-hour marathon in aid of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Frome Selwood Bowling Club’s Ladies’ Captain Kathy Kingman and Club Secretary Mike Bishop will play two back-to-back 12-hour bowls sessions on 23rd and 24th May, running from 9am to 9pm.

Spectators and supporters are invited to attend throughout the weekend to support the pair or have a go at playing bowls on the club’s spare rinks, with a suggested donation to the fundraising pot.

Kathy said, “We’re thrilled to be taking on this challenge for such an important local charity. We’d love to see the community come out and support us whether that’s cheering us on, buying a raffle ticket or picking up a bowl and giving it a try.”

  • Frome through to Regional play-offs

Frome Netball Report:
Frome Stars vs Lawn
County Playoffs - 26th April

Frome are through to the Regional play-offs after defeating Lawn, league winners of the other Wiltshire league.

Held in Swindon, we arrived early, settling ourselves courtside and got straight down to business. Our starting seven came out all guns blazing, gave their all and were taking no prisoners.

Outstanding shooting from GA Liv and GS Nat and, with so much pressure, they came out and delivered. Incredible mid court, from WA Laura, supported in the last quarter by Ella and C Han, delivering balls into the shooting circle with patience and speed, not to mention incredible defence back down the court. And finally WD Gi, GD Freya and GK Lucy working like an unstoppable unit to delay, confuse and regain possession.

With a final score of 45 – 27 Frome will go on to their next and final challenge in a bid to become a Regional 3 team.

  • Powerful climate crisis film screening

Frome is one of thousands of communities to screen a new film titled The People’s Emergency Briefing.

The screening, taking place at the Cheese and Grain on Thursday 21st May at 7pm, forms part of a growing UK-wide programme of events designed to help ensure that the public and decision-makers are clearly and honestly informed about the climate and nature crisis and what it may mean for communities across the country.

In November 2025, more than 1,200 MPs, peers and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media gathered at Westminster Central Hall for the National Emergency Briefing - a landmark event bringing together leading experts to assess the UK’s exposure to climate and nature risks.

  • Lions give funding boost to local causes

Local organisations have received a £20,000 funding boost thanks to the Frome Lions Club.

The club has donated £2,000 to the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath to support its appeal for a new PET-CT scanner. The money was raised through the Lions’ annual Tree of Remembrance, held at Rook Lane Chapel over the Christmas period.

Dorothy House Hospice Care in Winsley also received £18,000, raised at a sporting dinner held at Elmhay Park Orchardleigh in February.

Members of the Lions Club visited both charities to present the cheques in person.

  • Mothers and daughters to play live music event

A special night of live music is coming to Frome, bringing together two bands featuring local mothers and daughters.

The event on 16th May at The Tunnels will see The Electric Kool-Aid Collective and What The Fuzz perform. Both bands feature mothers and daughters playing together, adding an extra dimension to the evening through a shared love of music across generations.

All currently studying Commercial Music at Bath Spa University, they blend psychedelic rock, funk and late-60s-inspired original songs with a fresh contemporary edge. With their debut single released on 2nd May, this is a chance to catch a band very much on the rise.

  • Fair Frome experiences higher demand from residents in need

A charity in Frome helping residents in poverty says it is experiencing higher demand, with an increase in rough sleepers and families struggling to access food vouchers.

Senior coordinator of Fair Frome Lenka Grimes, which runs the town’s food bank and Community Pantry among other projects, raised concerns at the Full Council meeting on 22nd April.

She said, “I am led to believe that Somerset has the third highest number of rough sleepers in the country at the moment. It is having a particular impact on us. It is daily. We are having people coming in for showers, hanging out, people with severe mental health issues. It is a real issue.”

Lenka also raised concerns for many families in Frome who have struggled to access free school meal holiday vouchers over the Easter holidays. She said a recent change in the system means families whose children receive free school meals now have to apply for the vouchers rather than receiving them automatically.

  • Council commissions review of management structure

Frome Town Council has commissioned an external review of its staffing and leadership model to ensure it is fit for purpose as the organisation grows.

At the Full Council meeting on Wednesday 22nd April, the majority of councillors agreed for Council HR and Government Support (CHRGS) to carry out the review at a cost of £4,300.

The assessment will examine management capacity, reporting lines and whether current arrangements are sustainable. The council says it has seven line managers, which is ‘unusual’ for an organisation of its size.

Leader of the council, Cllr Fiona Barrows said, “We are a council that is in transition: we’re not the same council we were five or 10 years ago. Getting our management structure right is so important – we’ve grown organically over recent years; A lot of our managers have stayed in post quite a long time, which is fantastic and there comes a point where you have to take a pause and ask ‘is this working as well as it could?’ I believe we’ll get a lot of value for our money in terms of efficiency savings and effectiveness savings.”

  • Countdown’s Susie Dent to appear at Memorial Theatre

Countdown star Susie Dent will bring her new live show to Frome this month, offering audiences a fascinating look at the quirks and curiosities of the English language.

‘Britain’s best-loved wordsmith’ will appear at the Memorial Theatre on Saturday 16th May at 2pm with her latest tour, ‘Word Perfect’.

Following on from her hit show ‘The Secret Life of Words’, Susie is back with a brand-new collection of facts and stories from the wonderful world of words.

Have you ever wondered whether there’s a word for going to the fridge for the umpteenth time in search of something new? Or puzzled over the reason why a group of crows is called a ‘murder’, while owls form a ‘parliament’? Is teen slang actually designed to make us tear our hair out? And just how many words do we need for being drunk?
