The next talk in the Frome Society’s programme of Saturday afternoon lectures will be given by Andrew Pickering on Saturday 2nd November and will be about the history of Bruton in Selwood.
Bruton was an Anglo-Saxon town that emerged from a settlement beside the church, which was founded around the start of the 8th century. “It was an important ecclesiastical centre, with a medieval priory that expanded into an abbey, which in turn was converted into a mansion by the Berkeley family soon after the dissolution in 1579,” explained a member of the group, John Peverley.
“The talk will describe the lives of notable and eminent individuals in Bruton’s history as well as ordinary folk raising families while working on the land and in the town’s mills.
“Andrew is chair of the committee at Bruton Museum and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He was programme manager for the history, heritage and archaeology degree at Plymouth University from 2008 to 2022 and has written several local histories.”
Frome Society’s lectures take place in the Assembly Rooms at the rear of Frome Memorial Theatre (BA11 1EB) starting at 2.30pm. Visitors are welcome but are asked to pay an entry fee of £5.
