Dogs for Health become Friends at the hospital!

A lively pair of visitors made their first appointment to introduce themselves at the Frome Community Hospital in the new year.

Their cheerful disposition and waggy tails delighted the patients at their bedside during their visit on the Marshfield Ward. Molly the spaniel and Ginny the saluki were making their preliminary visit, which will now be part of a regular schedule of visits to the ward, being provided by a newly formed Frome-based organisation Dogs for Health.

Dogs for Health is an innovative project initially thought up by Jenny Hartnoll of Health Connections Mendip. Specialist dog-handler and a medical first responder, James Lewis, and health connector, Amy Wood, have developed the idea and now, with a small team of volunteers, are training amiable dogs to visit housebound people, care homes and schools where therapeutic contact with a dog is so important for health and wellbeing, as well as helping to reduce loneliness and isolation.

James says, “Where people are confined to their surroundings, because of health issues, age, disability, or are simply lonely and cannot get about, it has been proven they can benefit by having regular contact with a visit from a loving docile animal such as Molly or Ginny. Many will have been dog owners themselves, and it is a delight to see their faces light-up during our visits.

“This is the start of a formalised programme for us, with up to 10 dogs currently being assessed to join the team over the coming months. Our concentration is on home visits with our fully approved handlers.

“We must give our thanks to the Friends of Frome Hospital who have provided financial help to us to get the Dogs for Health project off the ground. All our volunteer dog-handlers are providing their own animals, so it is our aim to offer these home visits free of charge. However, we will be relying on donations to maintain the high level of accreditation that is required to provide this service.    If you know someone who will benefit from a visit please contact us by email: dogsforhealth@yahoo.com “

Friends of Frome Hospital spokesman, Derek Trick said, “When it was explained to us and seeking support, the trustees realised it was not a barking mad idea, so we were delighted to support the Dogs for Health project which dovetails nicely with our community ethos – here to enhance patient care.”

Molly is four and is a live scent search dog specialising in collapsed structures and immediate area searches.  She is part of an international response team deployed to disasters anywhere in the World

The Dogs for Health team will be the guests at the Friends of Frome Hospital inaugural Saturday coffee morning in the foyer of the hospital on February 1st from 10.00am to noon.

  • Mammoth Mending Day for broken clothes

A clothes mending day will run at Frome Town Hall this month offering residents practical help to repair and reuse worn garments.

The Mammoth Mending Day, taking place on Saturday 31st January from 10am to 4pm, is organised by the Everyone Needs Pockets Textile Network, a group devoted to cutting waste, saving money and encouraging sustainable fashion at a local level.

“Come with all your piles of clothes that need a fix,” said the organisers. “It’s a new year, so it’s a great time to get things sorted. Do you have clothes that just need a bit of repair – a hole, a button, a tear? Or maybe you need advice on an alteration, or whether a bit of clothing can be salvaged?

“Volunteers from the Everyone Needs Pockets Textile Network will be there throughout the day. The stitchers and fixers will be working through their own pile of mends, but they can help you with yours too."

  • Wiltshire College & University Centre opens doors to prospective students following record-breaking open events

Wiltshire College & University Centre is welcoming prospective students and their families through their doors this winter and spring, following its most successful programme of open events to date.

More than 2,000 people attended the College’s autumn open events across the four campuses and its specialist University Centre at Castle Combe, with strong interest from young people, adults and parents exploring their next steps in education.

Building on the momentum, the College is hosting a further eight open events across January, February and April, giving prospective students the opportunity to meet lecturers, tour facilities and receive guidance on courses, apprenticeships and university-level study.

Feedback from the autumn events reflected a high level of satisfaction with the overall experience, with many visitors describing the events as welcoming, informative and reassuring. This was matched by strong levels of engagement and confidence, with up to a third of visitors applying on the day and many more saying they plan to apply soon.

  • Donate old devices at tech amnesty

Donate old devices for reuse or recycling at Donate IT’s tech amnesty at Frome Town Hall on Saturday 31st January.

Anyone with unwanted digital devices such as smartphones, laptops, consoles or desktop computers can drop them off to be securely wiped of all data and either donated to someone in need or disposed of responsibly within the UK.

Frome Town Councillor Anne Hill said, “70% of global toxic waste is linked to discarded tech in landfill and the precious metals inside devices, such as copper and cobalt, are much more intensive and difficult to mine than they are to recycle.”

Somerset charity Donate IT recently handed out their 2,000th device and now have 50 drop-off points across Somerset, including the town hall. Frome Town Council collects devices for Donate IT all year round and hosts two tech amnesties each year.

  • No final decision on size of planned Somerset council tax increase

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset residents will face higher council bills in the spring – but no final decision has been made on how much they will increase.

Somerset Council is in detailed negotiations with central government as it moves to set its budget in late-February, with officers seeking a third consecutive year of exceptional financial support in order to close a £73m budget gap.

Conservative opposition leader Councillor Diogo Rodrigues claimed that the council had asked the government to let it increase council tax by “more than 20 per cent” last financial year and had requested an increase of “around ten per cent” for the coming financial year.

Council leader Bill Revans responded that these were “illustrative figures” and no formal request for such an increase had been made.

Like other unitary authorities in England and Wales, Somerset Council legally cannot raise its council tax level by more than 4.99 per cent without staging an expensive referendum.

  • Historic adventures of a local family at society’s next lecture

True life adventures of a Frome family in the 18th and 19th centuries will be explored at Frome Society’s next Saturday afternoon lecture.

The lecture, on 24th January, will be delivered by Keith Browning, who has researched family histories. It will highlight the lives of the local gentry as they interact with their tenants and parishioners.

Organisers say, “Every level of society had to struggle as Britain was transformed from a country dependent on sheep to one dominated by the effects of the Industrial and Social Revolution, which evolved to become Victoria’s Empire. The story features a family who should be the richest in Britain today but are barely known outside the boundary of Frome and the school chemistry laboratory.

  • Valentine lamp lighting ceremony returns next month

The annual Valentine lamp lighting ceremony is being held on Saturday 14th February at the top of Catherine Hill.

The ceremony sees Frome’s famous Valentine gas lamp lit by Eddie Young, the lamplighter, who will be dressed in period costume and light the lamp using a traditional lamplighter’s pole and read the dedication to St Valentine.

Selected poems, on the theme of love, will be performed by the members of the Frome Writers Collective Poetry Group.

The event will start at 5.30pm when a Queen of Hearts rocket will be set off and explode in a red heart shape in the sky above the lamp.

Organisers say, “Join us for a glass of mulled wine in front of the lamp with accordion music by Tom Woolman.”

  • RSPB Somerset Big Garden Birdwatch – “Together, let’s make it count”

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns this month, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Almost 600,000 people took part in across the UK in 2025, counting more than nine million birds of over 80 species. In Somerset just over 13,300 residents joined in the count and the RSPB hope even more residents will sign up for 2026.

The survey provides a valuable snapshot of how our most common garden birds are faring and taking part is one positive way to take action for birds and nature.

This year’s event takes place on 23rd, 24th and 25th January. People in Somerset are asked to spend an hour watching and counting the birds in their garden or local park, or from their balcony, then send their results to the RSPB.

In Somerset the top three birds recorded last year were: House Sparrow, Blue Tit and Starling.
