DOROTHY House Hospice have received £750 worth of hygiene products from the colleagues at Asda Frome through the Asda Foundation grants. 

Community champion Jackie Bryant said, “We are always 100% committed to supporting Dorothy House. They do such an amazing job of looking after the patients and their families”.

  • ‘Fete of ideas’ to explore Frome’s identity A free, one-day event exploring the identity, future and community spirit of Frome will be held at Silk Mill on Saturday 19th September. The venue will be transformed into ‘The ForEm’—a pop-up fete featuring a mix of ideas, live performances, games, films, and original artworks from 10am to 6pm. Created by local artist Kate Keara Pelen, the event forms part of a collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s Civic Imaginary Partnerships research project. Commissioned to turn academic research into an interactive experience, Kate’s creative design uses playful installations to ask local residents three key questions: What makes Frome, Frome? What do we value and who gets to shape the town? What might we do differently in the future? Dr Michael Howcroft, Civic Imaginaries project lead at the University of Glasgow, said, “We commissioned Kate to work with us because we didn’t want someone simply to illustrate a research report. She has spent time with the research, with us and with some of our participants.   • Council sets aside £1.77m for Saxonvale fire costs By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby with additional reporting by Frome Times Somerset Council has set aside £1.77 million to cover any costs associated with the fire at the Saxonvale site in July. More than 100 firefighters tackled a fire at the ‘western warehouse’ at Saxonvale on 1st July, which caused extensive damage to the building. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed the fire was being treated as suspicious. At a meeting of Somerset Council’s executive in August, it was confirmed that £1.77m of ‘unallocated contingency’ funding had been moved into a new reserve to “fund any costs relating to the recent fire”.   • From Roman Britain to Rebecca: New courses for Autumn at Frome Community Education Frome Community Education’s Autumn term gets underway on 21st September, and booking is already open with courses selling fast. Alongside its existing programme of Arts & Crafts, Languages, Words & Literature, History & Culture and Health & Wellbeing courses, there are a whole crop of brand-new courses this term - from Roman Britain and Frome’s own literary past to new language classes, poetry and the meditative art of Vedic chant. Languages wise, Sara Gibbons is introducing “Holiday French” and “Holiday Spanish”: friendly, informal five-week courses (on Wednesday mornings and Thursday afternoons) that will get you ordering food, booking a hotel and chatting to locals, so you can leave the phrasebook at home and forget Google Translate the next time you go away.   • Monthly charity bingo sessions for family support Charity bingo sessions will run at The Key Centre every month to raise funds for Purple Elephant Family Support. The sessions are organised and run by Frome resident and bingo fan Elizabeth Ayers and will take place on the last Wednesday of the month. Elizabeth said, “I’ve always wanted to run bingo for the local community and I’d also like to support a local charity, especially one that does so much for children. This seemed like the perfect way to combine a social community event, raise some money for Purple Elephant and show our family’s deep respect and gratitude for all the support we have received so kindly from local healthcare services.” The event includes refreshments, locally donated raffle prizes and cash bingo prizes. Proceeds from the raffle and refreshments will be donated to Purple Elephant Family Support to support its year-round services, which help families overcome their challenges.   • Frome teenager strikes gold at pickleball championships A Frome teenager has won gold at a major pickleball competition, completing a clean sweep of medals in just over a year. Kai Santano, 15, took first place in the men’s doubles at the Taunton Summer Championships on 22nd and 23rd August, partnering Stuart Whan, to claim his first-ever gold. The result marks another step forward for Kai, who has previously won bronze and silver medals at national competitions. He won bronze at the Pickleball English Open before taking silver in the Young Persons Championships in Stourbridge in June this year in the mixed-age doubles alongside 11-year-old Seb Oprea.   • Wrestling stars set for Frome showdown CSF Professional Wrestling will celebrate its 28th anniversary with a night of live action at Frome’s Cheese and Grain this month. CSF Professional Wrestling, which was established in 1998, has staged thousands of bouts across the UK and has held hundreds of events at the Cheese and Grain over the years. The anniversary event, on Sunday 20th September, will feature 14 international wrestling stars, with the main event set to be a WWE-style Tables & Chairs match between ‘Bruiser’ Samuel Jacobs and European Heavyweight Champion Bullit.   • Explore your next step at Wiltshire College A series of open events will be held by Wiltshire College & University Centre across its campuses during October and November for prospective students and their families.   • Consider the Wondrous launches in Frome this month A new festival is taking place in Frome this month, focusing on reconnection, nature and our place in the world. ‘Consider the Wondrous’ will take place at Rise on Whittox Lane on 19th and 20th September. The festival is a collaboration between Tina Gaisford-Waller of Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books in Frome and Gareth Howell-Jones, who is the official bookseller at Hay Festival. Also an author, Gareth visited Frome last year for a book event and was captivated by the town’s vibrancy and unique character. He said, “The festival itself has been growing in my mind for some years but I was looking for the perfect location to make it happen.   • New sculpture gives beloved tree a second life A much-loved sweet chestnut tree in Victoria Park has been given a new lease of life thanks to the skill and creativity of a local woodcarver. The tree was lost during the winter months but rather than remove it entirely, Frome Town Council wanted to ensure that part of it could continue to be enjoyed by park visitors for years to come. Working with the remaining trunk, Graham Derham of Graham Derham Woodworking has transformed the wood into a new sculpture, creating a lasting feature for the park and celebrating the tree’s place in Victoria Park’s landscape. The sculpture can now be found next to the café in Victoria Park, where visitors are invited to stop by and take a closer look. As well as admiring the craftsmanship, people can also bring along a ping pong ball and enjoy a fun interactive game carved into the design.
