A LOCAL drama group are bringing Henrik Ibsen’s ‘ground-breaking’ play, A Doll’s House, to the town this month.
“Frome Drama are delighted to bring Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, to the Merlin Theatre from Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th November,” says Tracey Rawlins from the group.
“Set over Christmas in mid nineteenth century Norway, this play examines woman’s right and individual freedom.
“Nora and Torvald Helmer appear happily married, though vibrant yet naïve Nora suffers a crippling dependency on her banker husband. With good intentions and without his knowledge, Nora arranges a loan by forging Torvald’s signature. The inevitable revelation of the crime results in a spectacular confrontation between the couple, as they face the hard truths of what their marriage and Nora’s life as a wife, mother and daughter, has been.
“The play shocked and divided critics across Europe with its depiction of a woman struggling to survive in a man’s world and Nora’s rejection of the ‘ideal’ family life,
“Now widely regarded as Ibsen’s masterpiece, it has received worldwide critical acclaim. It is often described as the play every woman should see and is as relevant now as ever.
“Frank McGuinness’s bold and brilliant version of A Doll’s House received its London premiere in 1996 and opened on Broadway the following year, where it won four Tony Awards.
“Frome Drama had a terrific year with productions of the highly acclaimed sell-out celebration during Frome Festival and the brilliant comedy Home, I’m Darling earlier in the year.
“Don’t miss this stunning production of A Doll’s House at the Merlin Theatre, Frome from Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th November.”
