As another joyful year at Christ Church C of E First School draws to a close, it’s time to look back on 2018 and remember some of the highlights.
So, join me as I jump aboard Jodie Whittaker’s Tardis and travel back to January 2018, reports Rupert Kaye, headteacher.
“The year began with a renewed focus on punctuality and attendance, with all children encouraged to attend an 8.30am Breakfast Club for free bowls of cereal and hot buttered wholemeal bagels.
“At the end of February, the Beast from the East arrived in Frome, putting our World Book Day celebrations on ice for a couple of weeks.“A wind chill of -10° meant we couldn’t ask children dressed up as their favourite book characters to shiver their way to school – although, somewhat appropriately, a significant proportion of them would have turned up as Anna, Elsa and Olaf anyway: Frozen indeed!
“In March, children’s Window Wanderland stained glass window designs were on show in and around Frome town centre. Five designs were even selected for a special exhibition at the David Wilson Homes show home on Aldhelm Court.
“Red and white England flags festooned our school hall in April to mark St George’s Day … and then remained in situ to mark Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding in May … and the football World Cup in June and July.
“But whilst Harry Kane was earning his Golden Boot in Russia, Christ Church pupils were busy competing in local athletics, golf, gymnastics, football, rugby and tennis events. After the August break, builders arrived to construct three new outdoor areas at Christ Church. In September, a new climbing web on the edge of the school field was ready for Key Stage 2 children to enjoy. In October, a new wooden climbing fort and slide was ready for Key Stage 1. In November, an outdoor classroom sprang up at the far end of our school’s Enchanted Forest.
“By the way, attendance for September, October and November is 97.5% (above the national average). Well done, Christ Church children! Keep eating those bagels!”
