First West of England is to trial some new, lower single bus fares for town journeys in Frome from the end of September.
The move comes in response to feedback from local residents and stakeholders and recognises that there are some towns where the distance-based single fares are not always cost effective for short local journeys.
The new single fares will be available on the bus at £1.50 for adults, £1.10 for students and those aged 16-21 and 80p for 5 to 15-year olds. With current adult single fares paid for on the bus typically £2.50 or £3.50, the new fares will save as much as £4.00 for a return journey.
Rob Pymm, First West of England commercial director said, “We have listened hard to local residents and councillors and are pleased to be able to trial these great value fares. The economic challenges facing our high streets are well known, so we are pleased to do our bit to help people travel locally without adding to congestion or having to worry about parking.
“We are very hopeful that local people will take to the new fares so that we can make them a permanent fixture and achieve a lasting increase in local bus travel in Frome.”
Tracey Harding, leading Frome bus campaigner and founder of FAVBUG (Frome and Village Bus User Group), backed First’s launch of a Frome Fare saying, “This new Frome fare should make it a lot easier for people to get around and about in Frome. It should also bring a lot more business into Frome’s town centre”.
The reduced fare structure will be introduced on September 29th.
