  • Frome Museum celebrates historic milestone with special exhibition and open day The town’s museum is celebrating its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of preserving and sharing the town’s history and heritage. Frome Museum is hosting a special 60th Anniversary Exhibition starting next week, alongside a special volunteering open day later this month. The 60th Anniversary Exhibition runs from 13th October to 6th December and traces the museum’s development from its early days on Church Steps, where it opened under the auspices of the Frome Society with a bank balance of just £150.   • Views sought on plans to keep local quarry open until 2055 By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby Residents are being asked to give their views to keep one of Somerset’s main quarries open until 2055. Heidelberg Materials operates Whatley Quarry, located near the village of Mells to the west of Frome, which provides limestone for a wide range of construction projects both within Somerset and across the UK. The company secured permission from Somerset Council in late-July to reopen Westdown Quarry, near East Cranmore, which will focus on meeting local demand from the end of 2027. Through family playdays, wildlife activities, community events and informal conversations, local people shared their ideas about how the area could be improved and enjoyed in the years ahead.   • Dental team gives life-saving care in Frome The team at a dental practice in Frome have helped save a man’s life when they provided life-saving CPR and oxygen following an incident in the town. Staff at Catherine Court Dentistry in Fromefield were first on the scene after a van crashed through a hedge across the road recently.   • Concerns persist over leisure centre cleanliness Frustrated residents are calling for improvements to the town’s leisure centre, following repeated concerns about cleanliness and hygiene. Residents have contacted the Frome Times with concerns about the facilities on Princess Anne Road, which was taken over by Freedom Leisure earlier this year after the former operator, Fusion Lifestyle, went into administration. Users had previously raised concerns about the reliability and cleanliness of the facilities, with MP Anna Sabine campaigning for improvements and working with the centre’s managers to make changes.   • Community pantry scheme continues to grow A scheme supporting people experiencing food insecurity has grown over the past year, with over 80 members accessing sustainable, affordable food. Fair Frome’s Community Pantry runs out of the Fair Frome Elliot building at the Frome Town Hall once a week on a Tuesday.   • Community campaign brings folk tradition back to historic pub A centuries-old folk tradition returned to East Woodlands recently when Morris dancers performed outside a historic pub the community is campaigning to save. Bathampton Morris Men performed outside the 300-year-old Horse and Groom, also known as The Jockey, on 22nd September. The event was organised following Somerset Council’s decision to list the pub as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), after it was nominated by local residents. Read more on our website.
