FROME’S Great Big Green Week is packed to the rafters with exciting events featuring the action the town is taking to tackle climate change. A few events have a particular focus on showcasing local food producers, reducing food waste and the benefits these brings.
Get some veggie inspiration on Monday 12th September, with Ally Read from Foodage4Thought, as she hosts two sessions at the Welshmill Hub from 6pm-6.45pm and 7.15pm-8pm exploring how our food habits can make a difference to the planet. Ally and the group will be making delicious pitta breads and mouth-watering salads whilst talking about ways we can reduce our carbon footprint. They’ll be using biodegradable food packaging, recycled foil and no-plastic cling wrap during the session which will be suitable for vegetarians, vegans and curious meat-eaters ready to try something new.
There are only eight spaces per session available and people are encouraged to book early. Tickets cost £7 from: www.meatfreemonday2.eventbrite.co.uk
On the evening of Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th September Frome’s Food Hub will be holding their 20-mile pop-up feast. Local takeaway business hēt (meaning food with heat) will create a banquet using only hyperlocal ingredients and food products, all of which will be available from the Frome Food Hub and grown or made within 20 miles of town. The evening runs from 7-10pm at the Projects Café and will highlight the brilliant farmers and producers right on our doorstep, including Vallis Veg, Ivy House, GetPickled, Meadowsweet, Palette and Pasture and more.
Tickets cost £35 and are limited, make sure you book early: https://bit.ly/ FromeFoodHub
Finally, on Saturday 17th September from 2pm-4pm, there will be a Ready Steady Cook event with the Community Fridge at the Market Yard. Red Tomatoes and Green peppers at the ready, join the team for zero-waste foodie fun. Some of Frome’s top cooks will be challenged to make a tasty meal from ingredients collected by the Community Fridge. The award-winning fridge collects surplus food from local shops and makes it available to the community, saving over 30 tons of food going to landfill a year. The event is free, pop along and see what will be rustled up.
Deputy Mayor of Frome, cllr Philip Campagna says, “Well, there’s plenty to get your teeth into this Great Big Green Week, quite literally! We’re really pleased that these events have been added to the programme to highlight the importance of shopping locally, so our food doesn’t have to travel as far and therefore helping to improve our carbon footprints. If we all make little efforts collectively, we can make a big difference.”
