FROME Golf Club has bid a fitting farewell to one of its much-loved players by raising £600 in a charity golf day.
The 15th annual RumFlan Cup saw 26 teams battle it out over 18 holes, in what was an emotional day following the recent death of the competition’s co-founder, Dave ‘Flannal’ Francis.
Dave, who died a month ago, created the RumFlan Cup with his close friend Pete Rumming in 2000.
The competition has gone on to become a firm favourite in the Frome golfing calendar, raising nearly £5,000 for local charities.
The Saturday contest on 28th February, played in its customary Texas Scramble format, was won by Trevor Atkinson, Peter Kivi and Liam Copp. The trio came in to the clubhouse with an impressive 59.1 points. Second place, meanwhile, went to Greg Pow, Alex Fraser and Rick Bird with a team score of 60.4. Third place was Malcolm Srawley, Rick Kerry and Tony Logan with 60.9, and fourth place went to Joe Ma, Rich Clifford and Derek Strudwick with a score of 61.0.
Pete Rumming said, “The day’s play raised a record £600 for Dorothy House Hospice Care, which was added to the £600 following a collection at Dave’s funeral.
“Having Dave’s son, Wayne, competing on the course, and his wife Julia at the trophy presentation ceremony, made the day all the more poignant.”
