A new youth club has opened at the Key Centre on Thursdays for young people aged 8 to 13 from Frome and the surrounding villages.
The youth club has been opened as a partnership between Frome-based family support charity Purple Elephant and youth and community support charity Young Somerset.
Opened initially in November and led by an experienced team of youth workers, the new Youth Club is already proving itself to be a popular and busy weekly evening of fun for energetic, creative and fun-loving children and young people.
There are fun activities and games to keep participants active and engaged, as well as a quiet space, sensory resources, gaming and life-skills sessions such as cookery, budgeting, healthy lifestyles, and relationships. “All run in a fun way, naturally,” says the club’s coordinator, Mark Burgess.
“We will be shaping the club and all we do together with the young people who attend. Their input has already made our first few sessions a lot of fun, so we will be welcoming more ideas from Frome’s fantastic young people. This is their club and it is their ownership that is informing how the club runs. As adults and a team of four professional youth workers, we are also here to support mental health and wellbeing and to give young people something positive to do plus, vitally, somewhere safe to be. We already have almost 20 members and are looking forward to more joining us once we have settled in.”
Funded by Frome Town Council, the National Lottery Community Fund and Somerset Community Foundation, the club is looking for additional volunteers to help run sessions.
Mark said, “If you have experience working with young people and would like to volunteer to help at the club, the team would love to hear from you (you will need to follow a safe recruitment process, including a DBS check).”
The club runs on Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm, during term time, at The Key Centre, Frome.
Parents and carers of young people wishing to join are asked to look at Purple Elephant’s website for more details www.purpleelephant.org.uk or to get in touch by email on info@purpleelephant.org.uk
