  • Lions raise funds for air ambulance charity at annual sporting dinner The Frome Lions held their 17th annual Sporting Charity Dinner last month at Elmhay Park, Orchardleigh. This year’s chosen charity was the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. A representative from the charity, Charlotte Humber, was in attendance and informed the guests that the air ambulance provides lifesaving, pre-hospital critical care to those in urgent need across Dorset and Somerset. She said that since March 2000, the air ambulance has responded to emergencies across the region, bringing advanced medical care to patients wherever they are. The dedicated teams include expert pilots, critical care practitioners, paramedics, nurses, and doctors, working together 19 hours a day from 7am to 2am every day of the year.   • Assisted travel options in Frome Frome is host to several services designed to help residents without transport to access medical or dental appointments. Frome Town Council’s Assisted Travel webpage maintains information about some of the options. Cllr Philip Campagna said, “We’re fortunate to have good public transport options for a small town, thanks in part to Peter Travis, Tracey Harding and the fantastic FAVBUG team’s campaign to retain and improve local bus services. And we’re luckier than many Somerset towns in having a train station. However, for older people, or those with additional needs, and with our nearest general hospital in Bath, it can be really challenging to get to things like hospital appointments without a car. “Luckily, there are options for you – for most you’ll need to register in advance so it’s worth planning ahead.   • Care home raises over £3,000 for Frome-based family support charity A care home in Frome has raised over £3,000 for a charity that supports local families in the region. Residents and team members at Care UK’s Rossetti House, on Welshmill Lane, collectively raised a total of £2,262.77 through a series of fundraising activities throughout 2024. Keen to go the extra mile, Care UK contributed £1,000 to the final figure, boosting the total raised to £3,262.77.   • Reflect on kindness and the planet with a free immersive riverside walk Green and Healthy Frome is hosting three guided walks along Frome’s riverside as part of this year’s Kindness Festival, which runs from 15th to 22nd March. The free walks will bring nature, health and the community together on Saturday 22nd March at 10am, 11am and 12pm. “Starting at the riverside by the Welshmill Woodland Playground, the walks will explore how the natural world enriches our wellbeing, with insights from expert speakers, fun activities and experiments to get involved with. This will leave you feeling inspired, informed and connected,” says organiser Annabel Crooke.   • Frome Fling to raise money for Missing Links Kilts at the ready, the Frome Fling will soon return to the town. Frome Missing Links’ popular ceilidh is being held at Rook Lane Chapel on Saturday 22nd March between 7pm and 11pm. The evening will include music and dancing led by local band Spill the Whisky as well as a fundraising bar and raffle. Frome’s Missing Links charity has been working to improve the cycling infrastructure and sustainable transport around Frome. Recently work has been ongoing to complete a multi-use pathway between Buckland Bridge and Elliot’s Lane. “Kilts welcome but not essential, look out your dancing shoes and join us for a fun evening to support this great charity,” say organisers.   • Somerset council approves ‘astronomical’ council tax rise By Local Democracy Reporter John Wimperis Somerset Council has approved an “astronomical” council tax increase of 7.5%, after it was given special permission by the government to hike the tax beyond the normal limit. Despite the higher taxes, more than 550 members of council staff are being laid off and parking charges are set to be introduced in free car parks and for parking on Sundays. As the council met to vote on the budget for 2025/26 on 5th March, councillors were told its financial situation was “critical.” For the second year in a row, the council relied on “exceptional financial support” from the government to meet its legal duty to balance its books. This exceptional support is not a gift of more money for Somerset — but permission to get more money out of Somerset. The government has given the council permission to raise its council tax beyond the normal 4.99% limit to 7.49% and to continue its “capitalisation” programme of borrowing and selling off council assets to raise revenue.   • Frome Busks returns this month with local young musician Millie joining the line-up The streets of Frome will come alive with the sound of young musicians as Frome College and Selwood Academy showcase their talent in Frome Busks on Saturday 22nd March. Kicking off at 11am until 2pm, the event promises to be an exciting day for music lovers of all ages as performers take to the stage to treat passers-by to live sets across various locations around the town centre. Millie Steel, a Year 13 student at Frome College who took part in and helped organise Frome Busks 2024, as well as performing at Frome Town Council’s 50th anniversary event last year, shared her thoughts with Cllr Sara Butler about the event and her journey as a young musician.   • Town councillors tackle street cleanliness following growing frustration Local councillors are tackling the cleanliness of Frome’s streets after ongoing frustration from the community over bins being left unemptied and litter building up. A spokesperson for Frome Town Council said Somerset Council is responsible for emptying town centre bins via a contractor and is transitioning to a new way of working from June 2025, causing some temporary disruption. “Keeping Frome clean and welcoming is a priority: I speak about it almost every council meeting,” says Frome Town Councillor Nick Dove. “Rubbish and dog poo bins overflowing and streets that haven’t been swept for months are not a good look; it just isn’t good enough.” Frome town councillors are working with the county council to improve the service, as well as implementing improvements to street cleansing and weeding.   • Frome comes together for International Women’s Day Frome has come together to mark International Women’s Day (IWD). On Saturday 8th March, a community action forum at Frome Football Club brought together people from statutory and voluntary organisations, venue staff from Frome’s ‘nighttime economy’, town councillors and residents to discuss how to improve safety for women and girls. In keeping with this year’s IWD theme, ‘Accelerate Action’, the discussion aimed to identify tangible actions, however small, that Frome could take as a community. Cllr Fiona Barrows said, “Violence against women and girls is, sadly, a huge global problem and a small town in Somerset isn’t going to end that, but on 8th March we focused on what we CAN do about it. “The atmosphere at the event on 8th March was so fantastic, collaborative and focused and we look forward to following up some of the ideas that emerged. It was great to have a mixture of experts and interested, motivated people in the room and specifically not to just have those experts presenting and everyone else listening, but to work together – and we really did.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
