The April meeting of Frome Ladies Club was opened by Christine Cornaby, chairman, who introduced Paul Millard, a member of the Freewheelers Emergency Voluntary Service.
The service was founded in Weston-Super-Mare in 1990 for the purpose of helping and supporting the NHS and is funded entirely by donation, all members being unpaid. The bikes carry blood for transfusion, blood and urine samples for analysis by pathology and microbiology laboratories, x-rays, scans and CD-ROMS, patient notes, frozen breast milk and any other small pieces of equipment.
The charity currently runs four bikes in day-to-day service, plus four spares. The bikes are fitted with blue lights and sirens to enable safe and fast delivery in an emergency.
Paul said he thoroughly enjoyed his involvement with the Freewheelers and the satisfaction of knowing he is helping to save the NHS money. Vote of Thanks was given by Brenda Burridge. Members of Frome Ladies Club voted to adopt The Freewheelers as their charity for 2019.
Refreshments were served by Jill Denning, Shane Dyer, Agnes Cross and Sandra Dowie.
Raffle winners for the evening were Chris Cornaby, Brenda Burridge, Liz Baker, Betty Webb, Jenny Boorer, Margaret Stevens and Elspeth Regler.
The next meeting will be held on 29th May when Richard Bush will give a talk on the German Occupation of Guernsey.
