Frome Medical Practice to support veterans with their health care needs

Frome Medical Practice has recently been accredited as a veteran friendly practice and it is marking Armed Forces Day with the launch of information and advice on its website for veterans and their families.

Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday 24th June and is an opportunity to show support for men and women who make up the Armed Forces community from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets.

Dr Dan Cook, who is helping lead the veteran friendly work at the practice, said, “The team at Frome Medical Practice understands the importance of meeting the health care needs of veterans in our community and we are delighted to now be an accredited veteran friendly practice. We’re now asking for any of our patients who previously served in the armed forces or is a member of a service family to let us know. Making us aware of this will help us to ensure we are giving you all the support available.

“Our aim is that veterans in our community will know how to register with us and will feel confident that we will understand their needs and know how to help them. As well as identifying veterans within our existing patient list, we are training our staff to better understand the needs of veterans and supporting veterans with referrals to organisations that can provide them with further help and advice.”

The veteran friendly practice accreditation scheme is organised by the Royal College of General Practitioners in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement, and it helps ensure the NHS is better able to meet health commitments set out in the Armed Forces Covenant. The scheme supports practices to deliver the best possible care and treatment for patients who have served in the armed forces, through better identification of veteran patients, training and support to increase staff understanding of the health need of veterans and the services available to them.

Veteran friendly GP practices are expected to appoint clinical leads for this area of work and at Frome Medical Practice this role and the veteran friendly work is being led by two of the existing GPs at the practice, Dr Susie MacDonald and Dr Dan Cook. Both these GPs have a specialist knowledge of military related health conditions and the kinds of veteran specific health services available.

Prior to joining medical school, Dr Cook served in the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps as a staff nurse, with the majority of his service being based at 16 Close Support Medical Regiment. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2006. Dr MacDonald is a regimental medical officer for 6 Regiment Army Air Corps, where she is an army reservist. She spends two days a week at 20 Brigade Headquarters as their resilience and optimisation medical officer and is married to a regular army officer, who serves with The Royal Lancers but is currently posted to Warminster.

Dr MacDonald said, “I have lived in Tidworth, Swindon, Edinburgh and Catterick Garrison before moving here so I have some understanding of how difficult it is to link up healthcare when moving around, as well as the challenge of linking NHS and military health records. I am the doctor for regular and reserve soldiers, supporting them through their careers, and carry out discharge medicals, so see veterans at all stages, both in service and afterwards.

“Service people and their families face challenges which are unique to them, and my aim here at Frome Medical Practice is to keep the team at the practice well informed, in order to ensure we can be as helpful to veterans and service families as possible.”

To let the practice know you previously served in the armed forces or you’re a member of a service family, and to read more support for veterans please visit the practice website at www.fromemedicalpractice.co.uk/news/veteran-friendly-practice)

  • Community DIY shop opens in Frome

A new community DIY shop is opening in Frome next week, helping people save money on building and DIY materials while preventing good-quality supplies from going to waste.

Fromebase, created by local non-profit Edventure, will sell new and unused surplus DIY and building materials, often at prices up to 60% lower than the recommended retail price.

Items in the shop include paint, timber, tiles, fixings, screws and other useful supplies. New stock will be regularly arriving and local people can find a range of rotating treasures to take home.

Co-Director of Edventure, Sam Evans, said, “Construction waste is one of the largest sources of waste in the UK, and Fromebase helps keep new and useful materials in circulation instead of being thrown away.

“When you shop at Fromebase, you’re also supporting Frome. Every purchase helps fund things like DIY workshops and repair cafés, while keeping good materials in use. It’s a simple idea that benefits everyone.”

  • Heraldry talk at Christ Church

A talk on the design and display of armorial bearings will take place at Christ Church.

The talk will be delivered by Stephen Slater, former chair of the City of Bath Heraldry Society and current fellow of the Heraldry Society of England.

It will cover all aspects of heraldry, the discipline relating to the design, display, study and transmission of armorial bearings, and will explore heraldic styles in the UK and across Europe.

Organisers say, “The talk will be informal and traditional. Expect slides rather than AI-generated PowerPoints. Bring your questions and your curiosity.”

The event will run on Saturday 11th April from 10.30am. The talk will start at 11am. There is no charge, but donations are welcome to support a major fundraising drive to provide an accessible entrance to the main west-facing doors.

  • Criminal damage setback at community space

Members of a community space on Vicarage Street say they are ‘disheartened’ by recent criminal damage at the centre.

The police were called to an incident of criminal damage at The Bennett Centre on Vicarage Street at around 11.30pm on Sunday 22nd March.

Windows and paving slabs at the centre were damaged, and two girls, believed to be in their mid-teens and wearing dark jackets and blue jeans, were reportedly seen in the area at the time of the incident.

The Bennett Centre is a popular community space in the heart of Frome. It is currently undergoing a renovation to add much-needed disabled access to the yard and cloister.

  • Frome stalwarts honoured with Civic Awards

Local volunteers and organisations have been awarded with Mayor’s Civic Awards for their service to the town.

The awards were presented by Mayor Anita Collier at the Annual Town Meeting on Wednesday 1st April at Frome Town Hall.

The award recipients were The Pod Charity, family support charity Purple Elephant, Director of the Merlin Theatre Claudia Pepler, Jane Norris from the Royal British Legion, Ted Prendergast from Safe Space Frome, and Marilyn Burrows from the Widows and Widowers Group.

Before the awards were presented, Cllr Anita Collier gave a presentation sharing highlights from her year as mayor. She said, “I absolutely love what I do. It’s something that makes me very emotional just to think about it, to be honest. I have always been a very strong ambassador for Frome. It’s a fabulous honour and it has been an enormous pleasure for me to see and do so much in this incredible town. We are so lucky here with all the kindness that people show in every respect and all the wonderful work that people do.”

  • Leisure centre operator goes into administration

The charity running Frome Leisure Centre has gone into administration, with Somerset Council looking to appoint a new operator in the next three months.

Fusion Lifestyle went into administration on 1st April. Professional services company S&W Partners LLP (S&W) was appointed as administrator, and will run Fusion on a temporary basis for three months.

Frome MP Anna Sabine, who has been campaigning over ‘persistent issues’ at Frome Leisure Centre, has launched a petition to show support for the facility.

She said, “I am sorry to hear that Fusion has fallen into administration, leaving Frome’s leisure centre facing yet more uncertainty. For years, residents have endured broken boilers, unusable changing rooms, closed courts, gym issues and cancelled sessions, all while still paying memberships. I’ve repeatedly raised these failures with Fusion and Somerset Council.

“I’m relieved that Somerset Council have stepped in to secure the leisure centre until the summer, but long-term planning is crucial to securing the use of these facilities for our town. I hope other provisions will be found quickly.”

  • Archie’s double clinches title!

Monday 6th April
Southern League Premier South Division
Frome Town 3-2 Shaftesbury

Frome Town have been crowned Southern League Premier South Champions after goals from David Duru and two from Archie Ferris clinched a dramatic 3-2 win against Shaftesbury on Easter Monday.

Talisman Duru broke the deadlock inside four minutes with his audacious kick over Ben Taylor’s head between the sticks.

However, the visitors responded in rapid time, with Jack Hoey netting the equaliser just five minutes after; his effort was fired into the top left corner after a throw-in was poorly cleared.

The Rockies, in fact, took the lead just shortly into the second half; after Harris Feltham’s foul inside the box, Santos sent Kyle Phillips the wrong way.

However, it was Frome’s leading goal-scorer who stole the show with Ferris’ brace with just three minutes between each of them, sending Badgers Hill into raptures.
