A MAN from Frome is hoping to find out who put a signpost to Frome on a totem pole in Port Stanley on the Falkland Islands.
Patrick Abrahams was visiting the island on holiday when he came across the island’s famous totem pole and was surprised to see ‘Frome’.
Patrick said, “When British troops re-occupied Port Stanley after the Falklands conflict in 1982, they put up a very tall telegraph pole outside Port Stanley and added signposts to show the direction and distances to their respective home towns.
“The signposts have been added to over the years – with several hundred now fixed to the pole.
“We were lucky to have visited the Falklands in November this year, and were delighted to see that Frome is on the pole! It’s listed as 7,808 miles away, I’ve checked the distance and I believe it is 100% accurate.
“With the Frome signpost looking like it’s been there for a while, it would be great to know who put Frome on the map in the Falklands – there may be more stories behind this!”
