The new summer bowling season is starting to get into full swing at Frome Park.
The club reports, “The weather has been mainly dry so far, if at times on the cold side, and players are starting to get some regular games to build up some form.
“The men have started their County League campaign, both the A and B teams are in East 1 this season. The A team started with a disappointing away defeat against Keynsham “A”, losing 12–0; while the B team had a much better result at home, winning 10–2 against Norwest “B”. The best rink was Roy Miller, Alan Cottle, Tony Wells & Les Stather who won 21-12.
“The next match saw the A and B teams playing each other, so there was always going to be one winner from the Park. After a close start across the green, the A team started to dominate and ran out winners on all 3 rinks, final score was 74-38 and claiming all 12 points. The highest winning rink for the “A”s was John Curtis, Kim Pitts, John Pritchard & Steve West who came from behind after 12 ends to finish very strongly to claim their victory with a 27-10 score line.
“The men have also played their first round matches in the National Club Two Fours. Frome Park A had a great win away at Bloomfield B, snatching the game by one shot 41-40, thanks mainly to Wayne Pitts who picked up the jack with his very last bowl of the match and took it through to several back bowls for Frome, and picking up 5 shots which swung the result the Park’s way. Frome Park B had a narrow home defeat against St Andrews B, losing by 5 shots.
“The men had a friendly at home against Purnells, playing across 5 rinks to give as many players a game as possible for some early season practice. A good afternoon with plenty of good bowls being played, the visitors seemed to find the green to their liking and got a very good winning result.
“The mixed team has been busy already with some good local friendly matches. An away match at Mere ended with the home side winning by 74-62, with Steve Forrester, Viv Lake & Kim Pitts doing the best for Frome with a 23-13 victory. A home match against Prattens ended in a win for the park by 83-59, with the rink of Alan Cottle, Liz Wells, Keith Mcleod & Peter Jennings recording the best win for Frome by a score of 26-11.
“The Fricker Cup is an annual match against local rivals Frome Selwood. Last year Selwood ran out the winners for the first time in the three years of this challenge, but Frome Park got revenge and took the win this year by winning on all 4 rinks and by a huge margin of 41 shots. The Park’s best rink was Olive Maidment, Tony Wells, Val Church & Nigel Hunt who won by 26-11.
