  • Frome business breakfast with Mayday Saxonvale A Frome business breakfast is being held at The Cheese and Grain on Thursday 19th March with Mayday Saxonvale. Frome & District Chamber of Commerce are hosting the breakfast entitled The Future of Frome Business Breakfast. It is an opportunity for Frome businesses to hear directly from Mayday Saxonvale about their plans for community ownership of the site and the progress they are making in the acquisition of the site from Somerset Council. The group will also share how they can directly engage and help influence the future of the town. Organisers say the significant development planned across the town raises key questions about balancing business growth, employment space and long-term economic activity with housing and other uses, giving local business owners a stronger voice in shaping the town’s economic future, and ensuring that businesses, talent and investment remain rooted in Frome for the long term.   • Frome Kindness Festival launches this weekend The fifth Frome Kindness Festival will be running from 14th to 21st March with a range of low-cost or donation-based events across the town. Highlights include the Annual Kindness Festival Lecture with time traveller and community activist Rob Hopkins at The Memorial Theatre, who will invite residents to imagine a society in 2036 reoriented around kindness and care. Festival Director Alison Murdoch said, “With everything that’s going on in the world, we need kindness more than ever and this year’s Kindness Festival aims to provide exactly that, whether it’s in the form of singing, dancing, music and comedy or thought-provoking workshops, talks and street events.” Read more here on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Frome Rotary supports skatepark project The Rotary Club of Frome have joined forces with Frome Skatepark Project and Frome Town Council to help raise £400,000 to create a new skatepark in the Mary Baily playing field. The project will replace the existing skatepark following a public consultation. The current facility, built 13 years ago, is said to be ‘nearing the end of its life.’ The council says that the Rotary Club of Frome’s participation in the project not only provides greatly increased capacity for the group’s fundraising but also means donations towards the skate park are eligible for Gift Aid, with the potential to generate an additional 25p for every pound donated. Frome Town Council’s Lead Councillor for the project, Cllr Polly Lamb, said, “Huge thanks to Richard Lines and everyone at Rotary for pledging their support and helping us create this amazing new facility for Frome. Look out for information about loads of fundraising events in the pipeline, including screenings, music events and a deck auction – and if you haven’t shared your thoughts on the design yet, you have until 13th March to complete the survey online, or come and talk to us in person at the town hall on Friday 13th March from 3pm to 7.30pm.” Read more here on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Frome bands set for regional semi-final Two Frome bands will compete in the semi-finals of Bristol’s biggest battle of the bands, with the chance to boost their profile across the South West. Jump Jump Joan and Butane Skies have reached the semi-finals of Underdog 2026, set to be held at Thekla in Bristol on 12th April. Prizes include £1,000, two full days in a professional recording studio, a promotional photoshoot, custom t-shirts, a mini tour of the South West, and the opportunity to play the final at the O2 in Bristol. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Jump Jump Joan, Sarah Hobbs, said it was a “great opportunity” for new bands. “We were really thrilled to win our heats,” she said. “There were 72 bands who went into the initial heats, run over 12 events at the Thunderbolt in Bristol."   • Frome family takes on 26 challenges for Motor Neurone Disease A Frome family is taking on 26 challenges in 2026 to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease charities, after their mum was diagnosed with the illness. From marathons and triathlons to a silent touch rugby match, the family hopes their efforts will show how MND affects patients, while supporting the charities Motor Neurone Disease Association, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and 4Ed. Local resident Dominic Jones said his mother, Nicola Jones, received her MND diagnosis in May last year. He explained, “We’ve got a whole host of Snowdonia challenges, various triathlons, functional fitness challenges and we have also got a darts challenge because of the element of motor skills and motor movements. I chose to do 26 challenges because it is 2026.” Dominic will also be running the Bath Half Marathon in March and a 70-mile Ultra Marathon in 24 hours later in the year.   • Safety improvement plans for Frome Bypass progress Plans to improve road safety on the A361 Frome Bypass are moving forward. Somerset Council is consulting on reducing the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on the road, used by around 15,000 motorists a day, where five people have died in collisions over the past five years. The proposals also include resurfacing the road, introducing central hatching to narrow lanes where possible, cutting back vegetation to improve visibility and upgrading road markings to make them more visible. Subject to any objections being resolved, a scheme to implement the reduced speed limit would start at the same time as resurfacing work at the A361/A362 junction, currently planned from 7th to 20th May. The works follow extensive campaigning by residents, councillors and the local MP Anna Sabine for safety measures on the road, Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste, said, “We are developing further plans for making this road safer with an improved road surface, and measures to reduce traffic speeds through the proposed speed limit and introduction of central hatching to reduce the road width, where feasible.   • Frome marks International Women’s Day Frome celebrated International Women’s Day last week with theatre, discussion, tea, cake, cycling - and a 32-foot American school bus named Susie. On Saturday 7th March, town councillors gathered at the Saturday market for their monthly ‘meet the councillor’ session. This month, they were accompanied by performer and influencer Lu Featherstone, aka ‘Lu in Luland’ and members of the councils’ White Ribbon group, talking about the positive role of male allyship and encouraging market-goers to take the White Ribbon pledge to ‘never use, excuse or remain silent about violence against women and girls.’ On Sunday 8 March, Frome Community Bike Project hosted a friendly drop-in session for women starting or returning to cycling at their base at Station Approach with tea, cake, advice and low-cost bikes and equipment on offer.   • Anger at Packsaddle Fields path closure Residents gathered at Packsaddle Fields in protest ahead of the removal of public access across the site, with fencing expected to be installed this week. Campaigners including residents, MP Anna Sabine and Somerset councillors gathered at the fields on Sunday 8th March to meet and form a human chain along part of the permissive path that will be closed. They say the plan for Somerset Council to install fences follows legal pressure from housing association LiveWest after its plans to build homes on the site were refused. They accused the developer of ‘bullying’ tactics. The site, on the northern edge of Frome, has been owned by Somerset Council since 1973. The public had been able to use a permissive path across the land, which was allowed at the council’s discretion rather than being a formal public right of way. In March 2022 the council agreed to dispose of the land and later signed an Option Agreement with LiveWest in July that year. An option agreement gives a developer the right to buy land within a set period if certain conditions are met, usually including securing planning permission.
