The AGM of the Frome Selwood Horticulture Society was held on 11th February when, despite atrocious weather and many apologies due to ill health, the club recorded a very positive year and an ever-growing society with new members joining.
They report, “Heart-felt tributes were paid to outgoing President Pam Secker. After nine years in post having succeeded her late husband Ken Secker, Chairman Ray Carver noted her commitment to the society, whilst press officer Jane Norris recounted the individual and joint impact of “Team Secker”, recognising that behind every success, there was Pam!
“A very warm welcome was made to the incoming President, equally community spirited Victoria Turner.
“Ray then summarised the year and thanked the committee, before officers were re-elected en-bloc. New posts of deputy chairman and deputy secretary were filled by Marilyn Vernon and Anna Giles respectively.
“Overall, the standard of speakers had been good. Where else could you enjoy a monthly meeting for £10 membership a year, tea and biscuits and talks ranging from orchids to hedgerows, companion planting to clematis, let alone new plants for free to tips, tricks and technology?
“Besides the monthly talks, members had been given, for growing and in-house competition, narcissi bulbs and fuchsia plants donated by the Gold Club, Castle Gardens, Sherborne, who once again had also welcomed the society on its spring trip. The summer outing to RHS Rosemooor and the autumn trip to Cadbury Garden Centre were adjudged good choices.
“Grander scale competition had taken place at the August Flower Show, when Selwood Academy Chair of Governors Christopher Bailey-Green had presented the prizes. The society records its gratitude to Selwood Academy for allowing them to use the school hall not only for the show, but also for the ever popular plant sale in May.
“Quiz stalwart Ken Cook devised devious questions to conclude the AGM, so confirming the essence of the 54-year-old society to be sharing good company with a common interest, whether or not members or visitors have a garden or allotment.
“Members and visitors are welcome to attend any monthly meeting, held on the second Tuesday of the month at Critchill School, Frome, BA11 4LD at 7.20pm.”
