FOUR local pupils have completed a gruelling challenge as they rowed non-stop between them for 25 hours.
Dan Roberts, Tommy Morgan, Luc Llywelyn-Roberts and Ben Wright rowed on their bikes in their gym. They set themselves the challenge as they attempt to raise nearly £4,000 each so they can go travelling to Tanzania this summer with Camps International. They will carry out volunteer work in rural schools and complete conservation projects on the Indian Ocean coast.
They started the challenge at midday on Saturday 29th March and continued through until 1.00pm the next day.
They aimed to row 250 km, equivalent to the width of Lake Victoria (Tanzania’s largest lake) in 24 hours. In the end they managed a staggering 368km (more than the length of Lake Victoria) finishing with a huge cheer and a lot of blisters! They had fitted in training for the row around their studies and the idea itself had been inspired by the school’s headteacher, Mark Mortimer, who had rowed the Atlantic twice.
Dan, a player in Frome RFC’s Colts said, “It’s been a huge challenge, both mentally and physically but we were sustained along the way with loud music, DVDs, lots of support and some homemade cookies!”
They also tweeted updates of their progress on the website they had set up for the row danielroberts1997.wix.com/ Tanzania-row to which donations were also made.
