SPURRED on by Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon win, a local tennis club is welcoming juniors to embrace the game at their summer camps.
Frome Selwood Tennis Club reports growing numbers of juniors, with Andy Murray’s win the latest boost for local tennis. Some of the club’s members were also inspired by a trip to Wimbledon itself. Supported by the Lawn Tennis Association’s scheme to get more juniors involved in tennis, the club took a group of 30 parents and children to Wimbledon on Saturday 6th July.
Amelia West, of the club says, “With the final the next day, the atmosphere was buzzing, creating real enthusiasm among Frome’s up-and-coming players as they spectated from Court 1.
“The girls’ Junior Wimbledon final was a highlight for many who were surprised at what could be achieved by such young players, an ideal demonstration of what they could go on to achieve.
“As a club we were delighted that Murray managed to pull it out the bag under all the pressure and win in straight sets in the dripping hot final on Sunday.”
Now, the club is welcoming children to take up tennis over the summer holidays.
Amelia says, “Over the last year, Frome Selwood Tennis Club’s junior coaching programme has doubled and is now home to over 100 regularly competing juniors to LTA [Lawn Tennis Association] standards.
“This summer we are running a series of Junior camps to give more 5-11 year olds a chance to play and get involved in tennis.
“Frome Tennis Club is a versatile club accommodating adults, juniors, social fair weather players and those highly competitive types at all levels of the game.”
The junior summer camps run from Monday 5th August – Friday 9th August, and Monday 12th – Friday 16th August, from 9am-12pm each day. The price is £15 per day with discounts given if you book for three days or more.
